All I am saying is, if you have a pup whose ears aren't up naturally, and you know they pretty much won't come up without assistance, place the puppy in a pet home. Why would you put the puppy through all those ear tapings and gluings? I've seen it, those puppies aren't happy. And how is this helping to better the breed. Hell, I know a breeder who sent dogs whose ears wouldn't come up to a different country to have metal implants placed so the ears would stand. Yes, I am serious. This is not right. Ears dont come up? alter and place.

Thanks so much for your tip crhuerta, I'll get that to try.  and also a big thanks to GSDloyalty, I COMPLETELY agree with you, which is why people come to a forum to ask questions,  I appreciate your opinion.  and finally as for autoban,  if this was a GSD in question don't you think I would have posted the question on the GSD forum, and not the "All Breeds" forum??  Again, this wasn't a GSD pup.  But I can say I have been breeding 30+ years, and in a few instances I've had a pup that I would notice shake it's head every time it's ears start to stand, merely because they felt "funny or different" to the pup, hence constantly knocking them back down.  At those times yes I'd tape or glue them for about a week, that's all it took for the pup to learn it's a natural feeling and after taking them down they never shook them down again.  I have known MANY other breeders who didn't do the taping/gluing and later wish they had, wound up with floppy ruined looking dogs.  I'm always in favor of "better safe than sorry"  it sure doesn't hurt them at all if done right.  I'm an RN so know what to watch for.

autobahn, have you considered that PET owners want their dog's ears to stand if possible? Every ear I've ever set has been for a training client with a PET. No one is saying people should force ears to stand so they can show the dog then breed it. I'm sure some people do, but making that assumption with no information is foolish. You're going to paint everyone dishonest because a few are?

And again, I have never seen a dog visibly upset about the forms, tapings, or anything else past the first five minutes. Aside from not being able to play in water, they could care less. Maybe the ones I've seen just haven't been sissies.

Robin, where can you get the product you mentioned? I've always had great results with Tear Mender.

Kelly,
The product is sold in Medical Supply Stores. It's a human product made for skin.
You can also order it at KV Vet.  It's actually called *Perma-Type Surgical Cement*....they carry Dermosal Remover too.
It was specially formulated to provide a leak-proof seal between skin and the faceplate of an ostomy appliance.  It also contains zinc oxide.
They use it on bandages, dressings etc....(I took that text right from the catalog advertisement).

The item number at KV Vet is # 50128.
*It's not a cheap adhesive, but it works really well and is safe.*

Hope this info helps....

autobahn, Wow thats a lot of traveling and $$$ to put a dog through so much pain just so that the breeder that you know can defraud the community by false advertisment. Didn't your breeder friend know that the creator of Neuticle also created Permastay, which is a surgical mesh and fluroplastic materials that is surgically implanted into the dogs ears. Theirs a complete video on the whole operation. To me it looks EXTREMELY painful yet these "pet" owners still buy this for cosmetic purposes only for their dogs. After watching the actual surgical video some time ago my ears actually became red. OUCH!

Keep taping them ears then, VonIsengard. Seems like you want to be able to justify it, pet dog or not.

Seems like you can't admit when you've been unnecessarily rude and judgemental. When I have a client express concern or disappointment over their dog's soft ear (from a breeder/pet store/rescue/whatever) I offer to set the ear for free, to be nice, and spare them the expense and trouble of those awful dobeman-style tapings/calcium shots the vets around here love to do to GSDs. Apparently being a helpful trainer makes me some kind of vile enemy of the breed? I do, however, STRONGLY oppose implant surgeries, putting a dog under for cosmetic reasons seems like an unnecessary risk.

Eucalyptus oil on a cotton wipe works well and it is a natural product and won't cause any irritation !!!
