I realize that, which is why I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that they would replace the pup, so the total cost in money is still 4 grand, right? - Extra, which is lost for good, not to mention the  heartache and stress.

I wouldn't blame Tony if he never got another GSD.  Horrible.

I'd like to say I'm surprised at the breeder's email, but I'm not. Seems to me this breeder is in denial. I've seen it happen before and this won't be the last time. The vet said it was ME, so what more does the breeder want?????

people tend to use that term''he was fine '' alot...at which point you need to say clearly he wasn't ''fine'' since this is not aquired at this age though it could have been subclinical the bigger they get the more ot stretches in a lot of cases ..plus there is usually more than one in a litter.I would just wait and get another one from different parents, they should not breed those two together again

IMO, it is the statement, "... when he was perfectly fine here. ..." that indicates a certain balkiness. It could be a last ditch effort for them to absolve themselves from responsibility and therefore, the beginning of a big headache for your cousin. Basically they are attempting to bully/force/get him to take their word, when there can be any number of things like, unobservant (best case) or denial (worst case) behavior, from the breeder.

It could be what it sounds like, or maybe (trying to be optimistic, here) that they are upset and going through typical denial in the way we all do: "how could this happen? He was fine!" I went through this w/a parvo pup who was "fine" that afternoon and dead by midnight. It's not that you're blaming anyone; you're just in shock. Hopefully, this is what's going on and reading it in black and white should propel them to do the right thing.

that is why i am posting this all for my cousin. because i know the breeder has someone reading this and hopefully he see's all of the comments being made.
