Do right have you tried to rub some surgical spirit over the tatto this will clean it and you should be able to read the number then get in touch with your tatto board and they will be able tell you his breader.

If you are able to find his past, please let us in on it! I for one would love to hear all about him.

Just a thought, but contact a local breed tattooer or breed warden who wouldnt mind taking a look at the tat. I have found with several rescues that have come through my door, that these folks can often "see" what I can't. It is worth a shot. Good Luck!

I guess my K9 was lucky... he was acquired by a small town as a puppy (as their only dog), trained as dual purpose K9, worked a year and a half, and then retired while still young- the liability premiums on him were unbelievable, especially for a small town where a few thousand dollars a year makes a big difference in the budget. They gave him to the officer who had worked with him (a husband of a friend of mine), who kept him for a while until they were unable to spend enough time with him and he became depressed, started behaving badly, and stopped eating. They were seriously, and sadly, considering putting him down, but I had used him as a stud before and offered to take him. He has done quite well here, although I had to break him of his detection habit... he kept indicating on local vehicles for drugs, and there isn't anything I can do about that, lol.

I'd like to know how serious you are on starting a rescue mission for retired police dogs. My husband is a police officer in Ohio and formally worked for the Ohio State Highway Patrol as a canine handler. The new department no longer has a canine unit, and his many attempts to start one have failed due to political and legal reasons. That being said, this brilliant German Shepard, drug trained, still has so much left in him, and since my husband still works crazy shift work hours, and I work full-time, we simply don't have the time that he needs. This puts a tremendous amount of guilt on us both. We are Cincinnati area residents. Do you know of anyone who could handle a police trained, full-blooded GS? I believe my husband still has his papers and he's from Romania. Commands given in German. He's about 7 years old. Thanks!
