Broken Toe??? - Page 1

Anyone ever have a dog break a toe? If so what was your treatment and did you take him/her to the vet? If so what did the vet say?

I took in a dog that had a limp so I took him to the vet.

X-rays showed his 2 middle toes had been broken. My vet said they were not new breaks and he may always walk with a limp. He ordered aspirin for pain management and crate rest. Aspirin so he would not hurt as much and hopefully learn to put weight on his foot again. Crate rest to give it time to heal. It took about 2 weeks and he is good as new. No limp.

My vet said even if someone had taken him to the vet early, there is no quick fix. Crate rest and pain management would have been the same.

I've had 2 dogs with broken toes, and a 3rd who I co-own broke one.  The first one was years ago, and it was the middle two toes.  The vet casted the foot, and it healed up fine.  The next dog broke an outside toe, in that case the vet said to just leave it alone and let it heal, since it wasn't a weight bearing toe.  I think they all bear weight, but I guess the middle two bear the majority of it?  The most recent dog also broke an outside toe.  Once again the vet wasn't overly concerned because of it being an outside toe, but he did put a thick wrap on it, and then rewrap it once a week for 6 weeks.  It also healed up fine.

I'm not sure if it would make a difference front vs rear toes, the first and last dogs were rear toes, the middle dog was a front toe.

One of the people on my flyball team has a Fox Terrier who is always breaking a toe (front foot) hitting the jumps, at least once a year, maybe more often.  I don't think they do anything for it, the vet says "yup, it's broken" and the owner rests him for a month or so to let it heal, then he's back again.

I'd at least have the vet take a look at it though, depending on the type of break they may need to do something, even if it's just the thick wraps and not a cast.

Right rear on my retired male is sprained it is taking forever for him to trot sound again and i was going to enter him veterans class however I am not sure he is going to make it now :( At least it is not broken. he stubbed it on a boulder best I can figure on a hike we were on. i imagine broken would be even more difficult to keep them quiet enough long enough to heal properly.

I accidentally stepped on Hutch's toe when he was 3 months old, playing tug.  Not minor, it was a complete break-through on a significant weight bearing toe.  He destroyed two casts within three days, so gave up on that.  A lot of crate time for months, only let out for training sessions and potty breaks.  Didn't work on jumps or A-frame for about 6 months.  I noticed it affected him for a few days around the 5 month mark, but no other appearant signs ever since.  No unnecessary strain and a good diet, and he's without doubt as good as can be.  Vet said there wasn't much more that could be done than the cast, and no need to believe the cast would be necessary.
