The mulch from chippers may not have additional treatment done. Nobody knows what kind of sprays were put on the trees or brush before chipping though. Also, unless you are getting the chipped from your own trees you don't know what kind of trees and brush is mixed in. Some plants and brush can be poisonous.

I agree with animules. That and they are a mix of trees so you'll get decay faster if soft wood is included.
Or transplanting poison ivy....I use to get it for my perennial garden and had cedar trees pop up along with the poison ivy. I have river rock for most areas, except that garden and haven't used mulch there since.
I use cypress mulch around my ferns/hosta's.
