Didn't know if she wanted to take that route? Don't know how they're stored live and if they can get out of that storage. Hence the

If you don't have a place to use the dog then the civilian version might be more applicable and fun for you.

+1 to Pirates Lair's post on the many different types of tobacco. Training a detection dog on this profile can be mind-boggling. You need to do your own research on all the different kinds of tobacco, you'll require exposing your K9 to. You want to train in this...you'll need to introduce everything tobacco related, to your dog. I agree with the post about steering clear of pseudo's. I don't use them in my training, or endorse them....but, to some...they are an option.

I think, if you want it straight from the horses mouth, you need to contact an agency such as Border Patrol (sorry....I'm from Canada, so we call it Canada Border Patrol). Keep in mind, agencies like that are pretty closed minded to civilian trained dogs. Not sure why, since the civilian trained dogs are more diverse/well trained than the agency dogs.

Thanks all for the great replies. I have learned alot from you all.

I have trained him to passive alert on his ball. What is the best way to start introducing tobacco scent? Sorry to ask such an open question. I have never started a dog in detection training before. I looked online but cannot find any information on initally introducing scent.

Kelly- all of the tobacco types I mentioned, along with Native Brands from from the New York/Ontario/Quebec regions are commonly smuggled in Canada and the U.S., if you would like some advice on starting your dog you can e-mail or PM me.
