I take deposits, from people I APPROVE ahead of time (no paypal buttons on my website-they have to be a good match!) but I tell them that their pup will be selected based on suitability for their situation. If that pup isn't found in that litter or I don't have enough (and yeah, that happened to me last litter), they can choose to wait or I return their money. If they flake out on me, then the money is mine. If I can't provide what they want in the timeframe they desire, they get their money back just as soon as I can get it to them, which may have to wait a couple weeks until I get more on the pups who are sold.

Emoore - as you can see from the common practices conveyed, you got a bad breeder.  Sorry.

No deposits until puppies are on the ground....and doing well.
If buyer "chooses" to not take puppy.....deposit is kept...(some circumstances considered).
If seller (me) decides to not sell puppy to buyer......deposit is refunded...period.

Yep. I'd much rather refund some money than worry forever that I placed a pup in the wrong home.

I prefer not to take deposits until I know how many I have of each gender, etc....but some people really feel better leaving a deposit so I let them. I have ended up letting so many people make payments anyway, that a deposit was really insignificant. They don't get papers until they're paid off, but sometimes circumstances come up that are beyond anyone's control and I see no reason to let a puppy age on my property due to money or sell it to an inferior home.  Often, the ones who plan ahead and budget are the responsible ones who have to withdraw when $h!+ happens and if I can afford to (NOT) I like to try and help out. I've yet to get burned...I'm sure the day is coming. LOL
