ZVZW said " Hi, Another way to change/modify this so you dont ruin the drive is at the exact moment he bites you or begins to have a ball in hand and throw it, he will chase it, it will change this behaviour some without any hard discipline. Given he has good prey drive, and loves ball." In my opinion you would need to take great care with this. If the puppy makes the association that by biting he gets a reward you have big trouble. You would probably be better to train him to sit for a reward, if he tries to bite give the command and reward if he performs it. What do you want this puppy for?

agree with jerry; have a ball in your hand and discover the fun of dog training

I would never let this puppy be euthanized. I love him... most of the time. He is a funny little guy though. And a big one. At 7 weeks he was 18 pounds. Hes also gorgeous.. haven't registered him here yet, but I will this weekend and post pics. I still need to get the tattoo number from the breeder. Here is his pedigree and he looks EXACTLY like his daddy: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/126336.html and http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/128665.html Anyway, yes, I do want to do Schutzhund with him, however, will he stop biting ME? I bought some gloves at the hardware store about 20 minutes ago. He likes going out but he doesn't really like people touching him much. He's not afraid really, which is what I originally thought, but he's totally aloof. Even if they have treats, he will rarely go up to them.. he just stares at them. It's creepy. But, there are times he can be so incredibly sweet and he would follow me anywhere. I just want to make sure he knows that I am the boss... because that is the truth. Thanks everyone for your help, I appreciate it very much!!

Sorry, when I say what do you want him for I really mean is he a pet?

by Melissa on 19 May 2006 - 21:05

Yes, he's a pet. He's our only dog. But, we definitely would like to get into schutzhund if we can find a group that we like. We want to take him camping and things like that. We don't have kids yet... I just couldn't imagine having any other dog than a GSD. I grew up with one and it was amazing. She wasn't like this one, however. Another weird thing that he does is bark at himself on the tv. I gave him a cowbell and he got into a knock down drag out fight with it. I couldn't believe it. I got it on video and replayed it on the tv. Whenever he seems himself on the tv with the cowbell he goes absolutely nuts barking. He's just a baby. He also throws a fit if anyone comes into the backyard. We've only had him for ONE WEEK. We did not instill this in him.

Melissa, you need to get a puppy tug for him. teach him that he should bite on a tug then your hands. Feel free to contact me if you have anything else.

nice bloodlines, you're describing the total package in a pup with working showlines behind him a lot of those dogs go back to mutz pelztierfarm one of the pillars of the breed don't get rid off that dog it was alluded in the thread biting equals reward... i think it was misunderstood; biting is the reward... kosta

by Yeti on 19 May 2006 - 21:05

good i'm glad you want to do schutzhund..I wasnt trying to be mean..I just thought it would be unfair to the pup to be "just a pet" if he has this drive....he needs a job...and instead of a pet home going crazy with him get him into a schutzhund home... I feel better knowing you will do that with him..if not it will be a frustrating life for both you and the dog.. You don't want to discourage biting for a schutzhund pup..redirect his attention to a puppy tug toy etc...then give positive praise when he bites it..

by Melissa on 19 May 2006 - 21:05

I will re-direct him! I don't think anyone was being mean OR rude! I need all the advice I can get. I can't tell you how much better I feel after getting so much support and advice from such knowledgeable people. I don't know what I would do without this site! Again, thank you so much!
