Morgan's are bays and smaller.

At first I thought they looked like quarter ponies. However, the close up of the bay's head is definitely more pony. Your description of their "gait" makes me think hackney, or Morgan, or a similar cross.

Vickie, that's the next thing I was going to say that I forgot- they have very small hooves, which is why I didn't think they were yearlings like my friend was told.

POA is an idea.

I can't save them all, but I might be tempted to try the black and the bay out and see what their temperaments are like. I am small enough to ride them.

This is why people need to stop breeding their mediocre mares every year. There were 850 at the auction, and they sold for $5.

The leg bones look too refined for mustang though the head of the bay is not really refined enough for a Welsh true....  Though the term "mustang" now seems to cover any animal that somebody turned lose to fend for themselves.  The black is a cute thing.  They do seem to be in pretty good shape, not too skinny as so many I see advertised right now.

I know this is a hot button topic......  Please take into consideration that people often can no longer afford to take care of their equines.  Feed prices are skyrocketing, believe me........ Not to mention farrier and vet services.    It is much easier to find a place to surrender a dog or cat if needed.  The dog shelters are full as so many here have noted.  There is no such place for equine owners to surrender their animals.   Equines are getting turned lose in the forests, and even onto other peoples private property.  People I know have gone on a trail ride only to return to multiple animals tied to their trailer and left.  People I know have had animals left in their pastures, front yards, driveways........  Please do not judge harshly those that have no other option but to sell a horse at auction, even if it's not going to the happy home we all wish for them......   Please do not pass judgment on others unless you can actually step up, take, and care for the animals those people have to give up.  For many of them, the equine was also part of the family and the decision was a difficult one.

I didn't think of Hackney. I have never seen one in person but they are the right size.

Animules, these are not Friesians or Andalusians, or even well bred QH's or Arabs or TWHs. These are equine mutts, that someone had no business breeding if they didn't have homes for them or want to keep them. These 2 aren't in bad shape. IMO, horses are damn cheap compared to dogs. I spend way less on mine than I do on my dogs. How much do they really cost if you're not boarding them? The problem is the mentality of many horse people- they're hoarders and they see them as disposable livestock. Instead of turning them loose to die in a climate they cannot live in during winter w/no food to be found, or just starve it, they'd be better off shooting the poor things. An even better idea is to only breed horses people want to buy.

The damn horse huggers think they did them a favor by banning slaughter in the USA. Guess what? Now they get to look like this and then when they're finally taken to the auction, they get trucked to Canada or Mexico to be killed. Yay! They sure helped, didn't they? They'd have been better off humanely killed in the US.

How's this one for you?

BTW, I'm about as broke right now as I could be w/a custody battle and losing my job when the business closed, but my animals are still fed. I promise I will shoot them myself before I allow them to suffer starvation and slaughter in a foreign country.

This wasn't supposed to start a debate about auctioning horses; I just wanted to know wth these things are. I kind of liked those 2 and might be interested. If not, I can certainly keep them until they find a home.

That old bag of bones is really sad, isn't he? He appears TB.

I agree with animules.  The economy has really taken a toll on many people and them having to make those  dreaded  decisions.....Look at it this way, If we were down to our last buck, and we need to buy food for our family or feed for the horses, (pets), which would you choose to feed?

I know that some breeders breed for the wrong reasons, but in many situations they had no idea the economy would continue to spiral downward as it has done. JMHO

No, no excuse. Right and wrong. Simple. Starving an animal is wrong. Shoot it.

Could they be Icelandic Horses?  (Hard for me to gauge the size and their fur is short when not in the icelandic cold):
