I like using the Bottcher harness when tracking, for similar reasons as Elkoor. The pressure if the dog pulls is on the top of the neck and is straight back, not to the side. I also like the fact that tracking is the only thing this harness is used for, so there is a clear signal to the dog that tracking is what we're doing now.

The belly band portion should be quite loose and comfortable for the dog--not used to apply pressure to the dog in any way.

I do not expect the Bottcher to teach the dog to keep its head down or to pull the dog's head down--instead, I just use it to keep the line in place and any pressure from the dog pulling does go to the top of the neck, not the underside of the throat or side of the neck--so it means I'm not pulling the dog off track or off balance.

Teaching the dog to use a steady pace on the track and not to lift his or her head has to come from other training techniques or the dog's own natural inclinations--not just from the use of the Bottcher.

Exactly!   We don't teach a dog to track, the track teaches the dog how we want it to track.  The design and construction of the track teaches the dog to work at the pace and style we want.  Just like we can't teach a child to read with out the appropriate books.  You start with children's books then progress as the child gets the concept.  We don't go from coloring books to college physics until the child learns. matures and masters all of the fundamental skills.  Skipping fundamentals or jumping ahead just causes confusion and poor technique.

I used the Harness on Izzy when she was younger, because she was like an express train, It slows the dog down because you have more control, plus it keeps the line in the right place, It is not meant to keep the dogs nose down tracking in that sense if the dog wants to track it will do so, if it does not then the harness cannot force the dog to keep its nose down and track
The word i use is Souk, but i say it twice, If the dog messes up i let it sort it out its self i do not remind it what to do, Of course this does not apply to Puppies learning

bottcher harness works different on all dogs. my old female needed it while my old male didn't. get some 1/2" nylon and make one for yourself. i made mine out of leather. op have you tried a light pop on the line and the command to such when she starts lifting her head? a tight line will make the dog pull harder and track faster but the nose will be down on the ground. good luck and happy training!
