Two Moons

by Two Moons on 15 August 2010 - 19:08

Falconry is a long term endeavor,
takes some dedication.

I love to watch them work, but they spend a lot of time on a roost doing nothing.
It's sad in a way.

Poultry is great but not very exciting.
Having farm fresh meat and eggs is worth the effort tho.

Pheasant are interesting but only to look at, and can be expensive.

I always enjoyed my peafowl but they can be a handful.

All birds have always been special to me.

That Hawk sure is a beauty.  That is some "glove" he is wearing.

Some years ago, my boyfriend brought me a an itty bitty hatchling (pre-feathers).  When they came in we taught him how to fly.

I raised it on special food from a wild bird place nearby.  It was a mocking bird.  He answered to his name Marvin. He went to work with me every day until he was full grown.

He had a perch mounted on the inside of an open window with no screen.  When the sun came up he flew into the tree and screamed for food.  Weaning him was very tricky.  My cat scared him off, nearly caught him-lost  a few feathers.  He would still come near when I called him but he kept his distance and we never fed him again.

I was young and did not realize how dangerous it is for the bird.  It was good that he returned to the wild.

Here are some more pictures of my friends and the birds that they have had.It is a dedication!!! You can't be squirmish about killing a bunny.Of course it all depends on what bird of prey it is and where you are and what "food" is out there for that bird. Out here there are cotton tails, jackrabbits, quail, dove and some other small rodents but that is last resort.

Young Goshawk in my living room perched on my louge chair
I sugesst to search your area for falconers and see if there are any that sponcer apprentices. I know out here you have to be an apprentice for 2 years before you can get anything other then a red tail,or Kestral. They are changing the rules out here though that an apprentice can have a Harris. They are an easy starter bird. DO THE RESEARCH first.Hang out with a club.It is time consuming and there is an animal that is involved. It isn't just a fun thing to do for a wekk and then you don't want to do anything with that bird.special home has to be made for them etc.
