I've been told a nice alternative to a GSD is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi (The ones with no tail. The Cardigans are bigger and have a long tail.) They are described as "big dogs in a small dog's body." And they are herders so they would have some similarities in personality. Plus they are very appealing. I especially like the tri-color coats.

I had not heard of them until now.  Cute little things!

If you like Podengos but aren't into little dogs, the bigger podengos are really interesting as well.

Yeah, as a previous post said, they can go over a 6' wall or fence, but most of them have no incenive to. I have had 11 Podengos go through my home and only two of them go over barriers like that. My girl Daniela has learned she doesn't like to jump down, so she'll sit on the wall wagging her tail (the neighbor says it's like that cat clock, LOL!) and she'll bark, once every 30 seconds or so, for me to come get her. She puts her front feet on m shoulders and when I back awa her back feet come down to my waist.

As a retired trainer I've met a lot of dogs and I gotta say these dogs are very interesting. Yes, they do like to perch, even on the side of a matress leaning against the wall.   My Daniela has killed cottontails in the desert, but several days ago my pet rabbit kindled, a baby fell through the wire and Daniela brought it to me in bed. She was digging, digging at the pillow over my head insisting that I pay attention. "Mom, you want to know about this. MOM! I KNOW you want to know about this!" It's day, five, now, so I feel certain the baby suffered no injury.

Podengos are very honest, "real" dogs. I agree that some GSD people might like them.
