They just say to make sure you cook the fish first.

MY DINKIE EATS RAW DEAD FISH THAT HAVE BEEN LAYING AROUND AS WELL AS ROADKILL OF DIFFERENT TYPES.  HIS STOMACH IS SO ACIDIC THAT IT KILLS OFF THE BACTERIA FROM ANYTHING HE SCARFS UP.

Mercury is a metal and I don't think cooking or freezing will eliminate the mercury.

Mercury can enter streams in mining country.

Canned tuna has mercury and it is cooked.

I feed Pharaoh canned sardines packed in water with no added salt.  He loves it.

I feed my dogs raw sardines every morning.  They defrost very quick from the freezer and all I do is wash off most of the scales and add a spoonful of canned sardines in tomato for flavour.  They love it.

Mercury is a heavy metal, and nothing you can do to the fish will get rid of it. The symtoms for mercury poisoning are chronic, which means takes time for them (years) to be seen, also depends on the levels of mercury ingested. mercury affects your kidneys, lungs, and brain. most of the fish we eat has mercury in it.
You can research most lakes and streams to see if the fish in them are safe to eat, basically have acceptable levels of mercury and other pollutants, and if safe for human consumption. definately safe for the dogs.

I work in a fish market, (lucky me) so my dogs get alot of fish.  The majority of the time, I feed poached salmon.  Raw salmon is a 'no no' as it  can contain some kind of parasite.

Salmon is really high in omegas.  I poach it up, retain the juice and mash it up.   I also feed canned sardines at times, raw flounder, tilapia is ok (tho I won't eat it, so I wont feed it to the dogs, tilapia that's not us farmed is disgusting)  bluefish is good in oil, as is mackeral.  Tuna and Sword are big mercury fish, tho you'd have to probably eat it 5 times a week over years to be affected by it.

My standard answer to this question:

All the Pacific Salmonidae (salmon, trout, whitefish)   http://zipcodezoo.com/Key/Animalia/Salmonidae_Family.asp

can carry a parasite which can be fatal to dogs if the fish is fed raw (interestingly enough it is not fatal to humans).

While freezing does kill parasites, it has to be done for a certain period of time and below 20C in order to kill all the parasites, so those of you who are relying on this method might want to read this article:     http://seafood.ucdavis.edu/PUBS/nematodes.htm

I feed other kinds of raw fish or canned mackeral to my dogs at least once a week. When I feed raw fish, I feed the whole fish, including the bones.
