I dislike huge scale commecial breeding facilities like Kimbertal and their doberman farm. I also wouldn't consider a pup from a breeder who doesn't actively compete with his own dogs, or hold puppies back as future prospects. I think regardless of breed if the breeder never holds pups back, or competes with their progeny, then they're just breeding for money -- especially if they're promoting their pups as great show/working prospects.
I don't much care for any "rare colors" or "exclusive bloodlines" ploys at all. Colors might be rare because they're out of standard, but that doesn't make them worth more.
I don't like it when I look up a kennel online and all I find is advertisements they posted on freesites, but no show results or website in the first page of search results.
With the limited registration I'm middle ground. I use it if I'm doing a breeding that I -think!- will have potential, but maybe the outcross is so distant I really can't be sure it might not be a total failure. I'd like to hope for great results, but not expect it. Especially if I were doing a show/workingline cross. Some of those are great... some of them, not so much.
Another thing that puts me off to a breeder is ridiculous price gouging on itty bitty puppies. One of the GSD kennels advertising with a nice glossy full-page in Dogfancy prices pups up to $5000 for a "champion select show winner" or something like that. I'd call anyone who pays $5000 for a puppy a sucker... but I wouldn't mind being able to charge that *lol* It'd put my kids through college.
