Thanks for the update Sam.  I hope he is appointed an attorney who just happens to be a dog lover so maybe he won't try too hard to get the POS off.  Awwww too bad he's having "problems" since he's been at the jail.  Probably falls down a lot.  I know some prisoners tend to get clumsy behind bars if you get my drift.  "Pretty much everybody thinks I've done it"...ya think?!  I certainly hope those who heard him say he was going to kill Buddy do the right thing.  I imagine if they hung out with him they can't be much better but they can also be afraid to testify if they know just how cruel he can be...I'd bet that's why they didn't try to stop him.  They either fear him or didn't think he meant what he said.  I hope they can grow a pair if fear is what held them back in the first place.

I hope everyone is signing the petition for Justice for Buddy!

Here's the latest update.

http://www.gjsentinel.com/hp/content/news/stories/2010/01/04/010510_1A_Romero_folo.html

I hope the hyperlink works. The story says that Melissa Lockhart was arrested for stealing Buddy and another dog from the bed of a parked pickup truck belonging to Joseph and Sasha Leber. Lockhart gave multiple accounts of her crime to authorities, none of them credible. Her license plate was recorded and reported to police by a witness to the theft. No info yet on how Romero got his hands on poor Buddy. The investigation is ongoing. The second stolen dog has been returned to the owners. All of this happened in the small town of Fruita, CO.

Yes, I too hope that those who say they heard Romero say he was going to kill Buddy  will testify against him. With his priors, they are likely afraid of him. It was a very evil thing he did.

Some may wonder why this case provokes more outrage than, say, the Pawsatrak kennel case (also in Colorado) where 8 huskies died from neglect in their kennel and dozens more were rescued and taken to several Colorado animal shelters for feeding and treatment. The owners of that sled dog racing kennel, Sam and Diane Wright, appeared in court and were charged with abuse. I think that while it is tragic that those dogs died at the hands of their owners, Buddy was a beloved pet who was stolen from his naive and trusting owners, then was deliberately tortured and killed in a particularly dreadful manner.  Some of us here, but unfortunately not all of us,  can imagine the bewilderment, betrayal and intense fear and pain Buddy suffered before he died as well as imagining the anguish and heartbreak of his owners. Most of us cannot imagine starving our dog to death, but we can imagine ourselves in the shoes of Buddy's owners and/or we can imagine Buddy's pain and fear.

Unfortunately, there are evil people in this world and we have to take care that neither we nor our dogs fall into their hands. When the unthinkable happens, we must demand justice for in return for evil.

Please sign the petition in the above post, if you have not already done so.

I have already signed it and added it on to my facebook page.  I just don't understand why the people heard him did not try to stop him.  I mean, people just don't say stuff like that for the hell of it if they didn't mean it.  I think they knew that was not his dog to gegin with.  As friendly as my GSD is, I just don't think she would go with a strange so readily without making any noise or putting up a fight.  She is a mama's dog.

I am sure that I am going to get told that what I am about to say is wrong but I don't care.I tell it like it is and say what I feel
I for one would have no problem taking this person and tying them to the hitch on my SUV with some real sturdy leather leashes I have and graging them though the gravel roads where I live.Of course we would take the scenic tour off roading through a few patches of cacti and over some big rocks....they are sharp here....and across the cattle guard, thats gotta be fun, and all through town just to make a point that animal crulity is a serious thing and should be punished. I may not be able to do it my way but the law needs wo step up and make more serious punishment for it.

More news: apparently Melissa Lockhart, the woman who stole Buddy, is the sister of Steven Romero. She is supposed to have known Romero was going to kill Buddy but did nothing to prevent it. She was charged with theft. I could see conspiracy  or accessory charges for her too, but that's just speculation.  Romero is due back in court Thursday at 3 pm.

Those of you who want to drag Romero (and maybe Lockhart too) have a lot of company. Lots of heated comments are on the newspaper's website. If he's convicted, the max POS Romero could get is 3 years in prison, a $100,000 fine and 1 year of probation. And his commercial trucker's license will be taken away. I'd like to see a more serious sentence for this kind of deliberate and malicious evil.  First it's an animal that gets killed, next it's a child or a woman with this type of sadistic savage, especially if they get a light sentence and feel like they got away with killing the animal.

Anyone have a Democratic US Congressman who could be persuaded to slip something into a current bill to increase the penalty for animal abuse? That's what it would take to change this particular law.

Update on Buddy's death:  According to the latest press report, POS Steven Romero's POS sister Melissa Lockhart and a friend Krista Morris actually told Romero to "get rid" of Buddy. Lockhart has told many lies about what happened and apparently authorities are still sorting out the details.

Here's the story: http://www.gjsentinel.com/hp/content/news/stories/2010/01/05/010610_1a_Lockhart_affidavit.html#comments

As of a few minutes ago, there were 28,458 signatures on the Demand Justice for Buddy's killer petition. If you have not yet signed, please do so. The link is below.

If you live in Colorado (or even if you don't), the Congressman for this particular district is John Salazar. The two Senators are Mark Udall and Michael Bennett. I don't think the current penalty for dragging Buddy to death is severe enough. It should be more than 3 years in prison, more like 5 or 10.  Your Congresspersons and Senators are the people who can change this law.  Drop them an email. Make your feelings known, but be nice to them and don't advocate dragging POS Romero to death like he did Buddy. Many of us feel that way, but that will paint you as an extremist to a politician and they run from extremists. Do be forceful in your opinion, but polite.

Contacting your elected rep is fairly easy to do. Go to: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml for your Congressperson.

For your Senator, go to: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

More details have come out about Buddy's last moments. Some of you may not want to read on so here's your chance to stop now.

The story is from the court appearance yesterday of POS Steven Romero, who put a noose around a stolen dog's neck and dragged him to death on federal land. Ranger Clinton Forte testified that he observed from tire and footprints in fresh snow that Buddy was tied to Romero's truck, which is captured on video tape entering the park with the dog, and then first walked, then ran and then was dragged when he couldn't keep up. Ranger Forte testified that Buddy's front paws were bloody and his nails torn, indicating that he had fought being dragged.

POS Romero asked for bail, but the judge (wisely IMO) refused, saying that Romero had a long record and that there was no indication that he would not jump bond if it was granted. POS Romero has apparently bragged about beating people up in the past. He was formally changed with aggravated animal cruelty.

Here's the story.

If you have still not signed the petition Demand Justice for Buddy, follow the link in the above post. Write to your elected representatives at the links above and ask them to change federal law to make the sentence stiffer for aggravated animal cruelty on federal land.

Here's the latest from the Grand Junction Sentinel:

One day after authorities allege she failed to appear in court when she promised, federal officials agreed to a personal-recognizance bond for a woman charged in connection with the death of a dog.

Melissa Lockhart, 32, of Fruita, was expected to be released from federal custody this afternoon after U.S. Magistrate Judge Laird Milburn set bond at $5,000, unsecured. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Heldmyer offered no objection to the bond amount or type, despite events on Wednesday that she said were “cause for concern.”

Heldmyer told the judge that Lockhart had promised at least two federal law enforcement officers that she would surrender at the Wayne N. Aspinall federal building at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Lockhart’s brother, Steven Romero, 37, pleaded not guilty at a 4 p.m. hearing at the courthouse to a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Heldmyer said Lockhart didn’t show until after 5 p.m. The prosecutor said Lockhart offered an explanation on why she was late, but declined comment on Lockhart’s statement.

Heldmyer also declined comment when asked if Lockhart will face a new federal charge for failure to appear.

Among a host of release conditions, Lockhart is restrained from travel outside of Mesa County without federal officials’ approval. She was also ordered to have no contact with her brother, direct or indirect.

Romero is being held without bond at the Mesa County Jail in the Dec. 30 death of “Buddy” the dog, which authorities have alleged was dragged nearly two miles up the west entrance of Colorado National Monument. Both Lockhart and Romero were indicted by a Denver grand jury on Monday, and warrant issued for Lockhart’s arrest that same day.

Romero is scheduled for trial March 22 in Denver.
