VM - very true.

Still, if there weren't poor examples there, they couldn't choose them.  We've royally screwed up pretty much every breed there is all in the name of conformation, what a friggin' joke.

I wish I could find the article, so I can quote from it directly, but some time earlier this year, Dogs In Canada magazine, the official publication of the CKC, featured an article by a long-time all breed judge. He showed pictures of how different breeds had been changed over the years by the fads of the show ring. His conclusion (have to paraphrase, as I can't find the article) was this:

Any change in structure that impairs a dog's health, or reduces a dog's ability to perform the tasks it was originally bred for should be considered faulty, and not permitted.

Now, if ONLY we could get the breed clubs to enforce this, all the problems would be solved.

I watched the program last night and it was rather astonishing.
I agree with Sunsilver.
these are known faults and yet they just breed in more defects on these poor dogs. The public that buys those pups arn't aware of it until they get that pup and then all its problems. just made my heart sick to see That Boxer going through those horrible seizures,The Cavalier Spaniels with the skull/brain problems, and yet the Rodesian Ridgback, without the ridge is Euthanized, and They were healthy.
I am sure not all the breeders over there are doing that, but Geeze, makes a person really think about getting a dog from there, especially when the KC is doing nothing to discourage that type of breeding. The horrible rear legs on the german shepherd isn't Beauty at all, it is just awful!!!! On the Other Hand, Zamp was beautiful!!!

VM,
(The title of the vid should have been Horrible Pedigree Dog Breeders Exposed.)
You suggested the most fitting Title for that Show. I like your title best....
I don't know anything about the "Expert Vet" on the show, but I do know those problems with said dogs are pretty accurate.
the breeding and c-sectiions on the Bull dogs, the luxating patelas on smaller breeds have gotten worse and worse, the horrible skin conditions on the Shar Pei as well as the eye problems and breathing problems of all the flat faced breeds.
I didn't think there was ANYTHING perfect on that Pekingnese at all.  Now even in the Cats, the beautiful Persians have been bred into Peke faced persians and they suffer the eye and breathing problems too, and the short legged cats.Just Aweful!!

Hodie,

Just wanted to say Thank you for posting about the show, I wouldn't have seen it, had you not posted
about it being aired on BBCA.

But Red Sable, they seem to be implying that reputable dog breeders are ok with those problems. I'd like to know how that wobbly GSD placed in the show where the filming took place. If it did well, then shame on judges and breeders; if it did badly, then shame on the backyard breeders who produced it. How can they imply that people who really do try to do this correctly are  the jerks? And how can I be expected to take the blame for some of the horrifying GSDs bred here in the ghetto by numbnuts and sold on craigslist, or by showline people who think MORE angulation is BETTER angulation? (No, I'm not referring to ALL showlines breeders, just the idiot ones.) I have actually seen those sorts of freaky dogs in shows. For example, once I saw a judge place a very badly bred, bulldoggish boxer 4th in a class of one. Whew. Hate to be that owner, but the judge did make his point.

Trying this, if it works, I will comment with next post.

It didn't work, sorry!

OK, it doesn't work to publish the spreadsheet.
Let me just offer my comment:

Hi all!

I'm not sure this spreadsheet is gonna work, but I can at least try.

Now, what I would like to offer to my sportsfriends is proof for the fact, that the hipscoring of the SV and the Breed Value Assessment currently in vigour are not worth the paper they are written on.

By the end of 1987 the (isolated) GSD Kennel Club in the DDR was able to practically eradicate Hip Dysplasia, with strict breeding regulations. Imagine a Hip Dysplasia Free population of almost 93%. And compare that score with the shameful SV-average of today, being 59% HD1. (And be aware of the fact, that in the DDR, ALL THE DOGS were screened, in the SV many bad diagnoses are never sent in, the scores here would need a correction, but I will refrain from doing that, it is bad enough as it is.)

The following spreadsheet, which is part of my latest paper still to be publihed, documents hipscores for the offspring of the greatest Sieger/studs in West- and East-Germany.

(Progeny of 20 out of 301 DDR studs are included (left side), to compare against offspring of 20 reknowed GSD's of the SV-Sieger Shows (right side). Details (and a far better lay-out) will be in my paper later.

Insiders frequently refer to the average number of HD-ratio of the offspring. Well, look at it!
Studs in the DDR total with 1,13 on average! The SV today, breeds at 1,60.
You will realise that in that case, these champions sired more NOT FREE HD, than HD-free.

Study it, and feel free to come back and slaughter me.

Jemima should not be attacked for showing the world that we're doing something wrong here.
Each and everyone of us should put his energy in dealing with our respective Kennel Clubs, so she would not have to make these movies, and our clubs start thinking about health instead of cash.
Keep up the good work Jemima, and I will do the same!

I wish everyone a healthy GSD.
