A puppy iherits two color genes, one from each parent. The dominance of color genes from strongest to weakest is:
Sable
Black/tan
Bicolor
Black

Therefore if black gene is combined with any other gene in a dog the color of that dog would be the other color.
Sable+Black=        Sable
Black/tan + black= Black/tan
Bicolor+Black=      Bicolor

A solid black dog is for sure has black+black genes. Asolid black dog will only produce black puppies if it is mated with another solid black dog.
There is a chance that a black dog produces black puppies if it is mated with any other color dog having recessive black gene.
Mating two dogs of other colors (sable,b/t or bicolor) may produce black puppies if they both have recessive black genes.
