Do you Guys not think it is a good thing that Breeding Pups is slowed down for a time, I certainly do with the amount of Pups just being bred on this site by a few and homes have to be found for them
I certainly think Selection should be the Main aim in any form of breeding Nothing but the very best Dogs with the right attributes and credentials will be sought after now by purchasers and that is a good thing
This way it will give the breed a brief respite to recover, but only brief it really needs years of selective breeding only to cut back on the amount of unwanted dogs there are in the world

A good indication to go on, would be by whether the number of litters that are registered each month has grown or lessened.  But IMO 1,164 GSD litters for the month of September alone is too damn many.

Wow!!!

Boxers = 2029 pups in 991 litters
Goldens = 2480 pups in 878 litters
Beagles = 2634 pups in 1210 litters
Yorkies = 2957 pups in 2189 litters
GSD = 3306 pups in 1164 litters

And the Winner..... wait for it, wait for it... is:

The Labrador = 6969 pups in just one month out of 2344 litters!!!

No wonder these dogs are having health issues (hips, elbows, backs) not to mention the temperments. And we wonder why our rescue groups are being overwhelmed.

If you look at this don't just look at the number of pups... look at how many dogs are being bred. Almost twice as many Yorkies and Labs as the next in line. Over 2000 dogs per month!!!

Excellent post, that alone speaks for its self, There is absolutely no reason at all to breed from a German Shepherd Dog just because you own one, and folk can say what they like it is being done, But really of no thought to the betterment of the breed, and say what they will it is only for financial gain nothing else
It is a waste of time anyone saying this to me but they have many times and it is this
I wanted a Puppy out of my dog  Jack or Elsie whatever the name or sex of the Dog is, that is why i bred from it, I have never heard such a load of rubbish in all my life
My reply is this
That is okay, you want a Pup from your Jack or Elsie, then if the dog has a big litter then you may then be keeping 6 to say 10 of Jack and Elsie,
Oh No, i cannot keep all the Pups, i only want one, I say what do you do with the rest,
Oh, i will try and sell them, next minute you see an advert asking a good price each with a good detailed resume of the Jack or Elsie, Where do these people think Guys like me are born, Under a Bloody Christmas tree i expect, But heres one fellow that does not have bells on
They bred there Jack or Elsie for one reason only to make a Fast Dollar or Pound from doing it no other reason
I really hope the finacial situation slows it down and if they cannot sell the Pups they may think twice again before doing it a second time, That will be better for the breed as a whole and less unfortunate Puppies born without a proper caring home
For as in all situations it is the Dogs which suffer in the end not the human

Then you got five more people that want to breed Jack and Elsie junior, and it just multiplies, exponentially!  By the way, that wasn't 3,306 pups in one month, that was 3,306 pups that people decided to REGISTER that month.  With 1100 litters in September, perhaps over 8,000+ GSD pups is a more accurate figure.  A good portion of people don't bother registering their dog, perhaps 3 out of a litter of 8 do, judging by the stats, and probably with intentions of later breeding them.  If it's an average of 8 pups X 1100 litters per month X 12 months a year equals 105,600 GSD's (in the US alone) in a year's time, and despite our terrible economy this year and everything that can entail, THEN  YOU CAN GASP!

OH, and I forgot to mention, probably a good sum of unregistered litters as well.
