For me I think health should be looked at first , as without it there is no working or show. Too many breeders are not willing to share what lines have this problem or that (some are even ready to SUE if you say it openly thier dogs have ?????  on a board like this) . Due to this we have massive health problems with EPI, DM, HIPS and there is a whole long list of problems that our beloved breed has.

I am for the total package but health has to be first - example  strong working drives and great temperament can do SCHH or tracking only needs a wheel chair to get around due to hips or back problems.

I think imposing a very strict interpretation of the "breed proofing" by the various breed clubs would improve several things PDQ.

Working german shepherd always had a great structure for the work it was doing all along ask the father of the breed. But then came people and started fucking around with the looks and structure and tried to fuck up everything.there are total shepherds that are healthy and can work and look great doing it.However, there are too many so called breeders who should not be breeding german shepherds at all.have a nice one.

I think when show judges do not hold to the standards and make there own, the dogs change to fit that picture, first mistake.
And all GSD's should have to pass some form of working standards period.
This is something we don't have here in America,  (AKC).
Second mistake.
And breeders could be more honest.....srgasrizuhghasigoighsigsip4w!!!   Sorry I choked on that one.
LOL....
Its up to the individual to do better, and the rest of us to know the difference.

Personally, it's a simple exercise to improve the breed as the deterioration of the breed is caused primarily by failing to adhere to the SV standards which are in place to follow. Any GSD that can pass the health tests, Schutzhund and endurance tests is breed worthy and qualifies it for showing and breeding. Those that fail, should not be shown or bred, de registered and de sexed simple???.

The problem is, too many organisations permit these tests to be excluded from breed surveys, no Schutzhund titles and workability tests required to be entered into shows and breeding programs which only takes one faulty dog with good conformation to win a show and generations of litters are bred on this dog which would otherwise fail to meet the breed standards resulting in more faulty dogs, dogs that can't work, dogs with faulty temperaments etc etc. The GSD is a working dog which needs to come first and dogs who fail the relevent working and health tests ends their career as they are faulty GSD's.

I believe this impossible goal could only be accomplished if A) AKC either is replaced by and organization that WILL REQUIRE temperment tests and breed surveys for breeding approval, or changes it's standard for breeding approval and registering litters. We KNOW that won't happen, so another alternative is to create a new registration organization here in the US, maybe in conjunction with the SV, and LEAVE the AKC altogether, that requires the breed tests, health certification, and such. That way, maybe we can separate the backyard breeder GSD from the true working dog. I know there ARE enough breeders that truely love the breed to make it work. We see this repeatedly happening to ALL the AKC registered breeds. Becoming popular is the demise of the breed. There are a few rare breeds yet that are not AKC registerable and still maintain their breed's integrity. I have some strong opinions on this, as I don't believe breeding working dogs should be a right, it should be a priviledge, and taken much more seriously. We need to start a revolution!;-) the future of our breed depends on it. Responsible breeders would take a finacial hit for a while, but I know it's worth it! Theresa
