oso, WRT the vet's suggestion being aimed more toward correcting a hormonal imbalance than being proposed so you could get your girl bred, the next logical question arises: Other than having abnormal/non-fertile heats, what symptoms of hormone imbalance is your bitch experiencing? There certainly are instances where insufficient or excessive amounts of one or more hormones in an individual dog, but these imbalances generally not only interfere with the dog's reproductive ability, but with other things as well--skin and coat abnormalities, for example. If your girl's only problem is with conception, I'd really be chary of going the hormone injections route...at least until I'd had her seen by a specialist. I do echo GSDNewbie's point--you're doing your homework before you make any sort of decision on behalf of your dog, and that's what a good, responsible owner does for the animals in his or her care. I wish you all the best with your girl, no matter what the future brings.

thanks hexe, this female is otherwise very healthy, she did lose her appetite for a while after the false pregnancy, but is back to normal now with her coat in fine condition etc. probably safest to wait and see what happens with the next heat...
