I use the thin rick rack, i could never keep them straight early on..... the rick rack is cheap and can be changed as it gets dirty which it will
I've tried the nail polish .. got different colors.. it didn't show on the coats....have always used rick rack

I buy cat collars or small dog collars to put on before they go home!!

Do have to be watchful....

Mom licks the nail polish off. I HAVE used all those methods in the past, but always worried that the little beggars would get hung up and strangle, so I stopped till they are bigger, and I take collars off when I am not watching them.
Yeah. I get them confused once in awhile. Better than finding one dead.

I agree that some of these things I see people put around puppies necks could be a hazard.
I think I saw pipe cleaners used, that one I'm still wondering about.

I don't use anything when the pups are small.. once they are 3 and 4 weeks and they are out and about a bit.. i do have little collars that they wear..  but I also take them off when I am  not with the pups..  if I have a couple that are identical, I put different color nail polish on the top of thier heads.

many years ago i saw a baby kitty that got tangled up in an afghan string and in trying to get loose she wound the string tighter and tighter.  by the time we saw her, we were sure she was dead, but the owner managed to get the string off and she began breathing again.  it was a horrible experience-----and i don't even like cats.  i can't imagine what it would be like with a puppy.  we haven't bred anything for over 3 yrs, but even when we did the pups were not that difficult to identify.  i am planning to do one breeding this fall, for myself, but my puppies will have naked necks.  hahaha.

I never used anything at all, but thought with my current litter I would have a go at 3 weeks of age putting little disposable safety collars on them,  I got them from www.Chocolatedogs.co.uk.

Dont bother.

They arrived and are just broad bands of paper with a sort of sticky end, and even worse, they are not big enough for my litter at 3 weeks of age !

I`ll stick to just letting them have kitten collars on at 6 weeks removing the bell beforehand of course.  This way, I know that the elasticated part will always give and they cant run into trouble if not being watched with each other.
