im just happy because my ole lady is actually getting involved in something i love. i have horses, love to hunt and fish, and she tries to be interested in those to make me happy, but she isnt in to it like i am. so when i started getting into the dogs, she dove right in without me encouraging her to do so. i think the moment it happened was when my kids were playing in the yard and a strange fellow was walking on the sidewalk and kind of slowed down and watched my kids. but inka, my black shepherd at the time noticed it and ran straight to the kids and stood between them and the sidewalk just staring with hackles raised letting homeboy know he wouldnt be walking back of he came in the yard. my girlfriend had seen this from the kitchen and ran out. i was in the back doing yardwork when it went down. but she yelled at me to come, so like a whooped boyfriend i did. after inka scared the shit out of the guy and saw me coming, he crossed the street and went about his business. so anyway, after that inka was the princess and she doesnt have one thing to say about me spending a lot of time or money on the dogs. i have been fortunate to get to know two of the most knowledgable people when it comes to dogs, vickie at powerhaus and carrie at hillview kennels. of course both women.

Core strength, and legs..... I AGREE!!!!
I have lost 26 lbs and bought a treadmill because I saw myself on video "trying" to handle a dog..... NOT so pretty. and I know my dog is not at his full potential if I am not at mine. I am still continuing to loose weight and feeling great about it. I want to be able to keep up with my helper during the bite work. It is all about self control, and discipline... And NOT making excuses, or taking the easy way out... We have some GREAT dog sports available to us women!

I distinctly remember hearing an old German Judge at a seminar at South County S.C. (was it Lindner?) tell a woman that "putting that dog on a leash with a woman is a waste of leather." (Pat Alley, dog Sonny, late 80's- God rest her soul) Another judge said much the same thing about a year later. She was crushed, of course... We recruited her for our little club (Feather River) in our first draft in 1990. She went on to do just fine with her nice dog.

I came in relatively late to the sport (80's) Sandy Filo, Rita Ledda, Randy Tyson, Sheri Marsh-Trudrung, Lucy Ang, Sandy Blankenship, Colleen Gorgas, Tracy Bullinger... THOSE are the women that carved the way for women in Schutzhund sport in this country, MY heroines. (If I have inadvertantly left you out, please accept my apologies) It helped a lot when a woman WON the BSP. I wish I could remember her name.

Boy, do I know THAT feeling! Happens every spring for me but instead of a treadmill (which I'd love to have... FOR THE DOGS) I have a steep hill between the kennel and the house and the training field. By mid-summer I am DRIVING the dogs up and down the hill, seriously thinking about installing a chair-lift. When I am a GOOD dog trainer I'll be able to teach my dogs to take themselves back up to the kennel and send down the next one on their own. Ha ha ha.

Anybody remember Joan Elliot showing Heiko vom Cux in the North American in Albequerque (sp? 1990?) in a skirt, on crutches?
What a woman!

Here's hoping a new knee will bring me back to the field & allow me to help my worthy dog gain his first title, & follow in all those feminine footsteps! A toast to the Ladies of DogSports! from a wannabe, jackie harris

Shelley,

It wasn't just those "old time " German judges  20-30 years .  Sometime I will tell you about the German judge who wanted me to turn my male over to him to compete, telling me that  while he could title the dog to a Sch 3 in six months and take him to the World Championship, I would "never" be able to title him, because I was "physically handicapped."  I don't think the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) recognizes being short, black, fat and female as a disability.    When I got the Sch 3 on the dog,  that SOB was the very first person I emailed, even before calling my friend Michele Scarberry, the dog's breeder.

Never heard a peep from him, of course.
