by habanaro on 04 March 2009 - 21:03

As far as the pepper ..my old dog monster ate  1/2 a lunch bag full of habanaro peppers  other than kinda gassy no real problems.... I cook with them a lot.  she nor I have any mental problems other than liking spicy food but I don't think thats in the DSM as of yet.

I had a Rott eat a 5 pound bag of M&M's, and that was the most she ever ate, however, there were no ill effects from her eating that bag. I knew many people that fed their dogs chocolate their entire life with no ill effects.

I would love to know the whole story behind the deaths of the chocolate eating dogs, as I think they are BS. I still know people that give their dogs chocolate here and there. Still going strong I might add.

My brother's 6mo old mix (who weighs only 20 or so pounds) ate half a batch of chocolate brownies with no ill effects.. We had an Old English Sheepdog that ate our neighbors whole birthday cake once ... And a different neighbor would give her a bowl of beer & a cooked steak every now and then.. She lived to the ripe age of 12 yrs old, lol.
I think dogs can tolerate more than some may think, maybe it depends on the dog. I don't know..

I'm surprised at avocados...we had an avocado tree and the dog would eat the fallen ones...he had the most beautiful shiny coat but never got sick from eating them.

Had a Great Dane that ate the chocolate B-Day cake I baked for my husband right off the counter and the only ill feelings he got were from the straw end of my broom on his butt.   Guess we got lucky.

We now have about 30 grapevines and so far, the dogs have not shown any interest in eating any...maybe it's the bees buzzing around them?

Not sure about what's really poisonous to dogs... Besides artificial sweeteners.  Of course, they're not all that good for us, either, so that's no surprise.

As far as certain foods being poisonous, I think it has more to do with the dog than the food.  Chocolate might kill one dog while a dozen others do absolutely fine after eating a whole cake or package of candy.

One person might die from a trace of peanut in their food, while I enjoy eating peanuts and peanut butter whenever I can.  Like I said, I think it more has to do with the animal than the food.

Avacado (especially the plant, pit and skin)

I have always thought this was a crock.  We own 300 avocado trees and our dogs eat them all the time.  My pregnant bitches especially would seek out avocados.  Never a single bad side effect.  The dogs don't eat the skin, nor the pit. I'd be more worried about the dog accidently ingesting the pit and ending up with a blockage.

Pancake batter...  or better anything with baking soda/ powder (unbaked) This really is life threatening for dogs.

chocolate, raisins grapes and onions, uncooked beans, tomatoes and such are just toxic in bigger amounts.
Chocolate ate is more likely to cause constipation....
The poisoned dogs by Grapes or raisins are actually believed to be poisoned not because of the fruit itself but because of the pesticides used on them. Still researching this one.
Onions cause haemolyt changes after giving 15-30g/kg bodyweight and toxic effects show after giving 50g /kg bodyweight (over two days) (Cope,2005)
Garlic "appearantly" showed signs of changes in the red blodcells after giving 5g/kg bodyweight (Lee et al.,2000)
a 30 kg dog would need to eat 350 garlic pieces to have toxic reactions..

Some even go crazy over appleseeds.... don't have the number of this one, but a few apples will not do any harm

It's the seeds or pits that are dangerous in many types of fruit. They contain cyanide. True story...a man was very fond of appleseeds, and used to eat them all the time. He'd peel them first.

One day, he decided to start saving them up. Finally, when he had a full cup of seeds, he ate the whole thing.

Killed him dead.

If the seeds aren't peeled, or the pit of an apricot or peach cracked open, they are harmless, because they just pass right through.

I imagine the same is true for the avocado.
