Me thinks the number is small and hence, why the dysplasia crisis.

Uglydog, since most puppies go to pet homes and are not x-rayed for HD... it's really nothing more than guess work.

The GSD should ALWAYS remain a Working dog..
"The breeding of shepherd dogs, is the breeding of Working dogs; and this must always be the Aim, or we shall cease to produce Shepherd dogs."

Uglydog... it's a little big brother-ish, you can't say who can and who can't own a breed of dog... that's a fact. "Working" does not necessarily mean healthier!
Generally, breed people are pretty vigilant about testing and scoring. In the UK, I don't think we're too far off having Shepherds named as a "dangerous breed"... we have to be very careful about what we promote. Any mention of bitework would send some of the loonies screaming to their MPs. "Max" (as you like to call him) lived in a different time, a different world to most of us, there is no reasonable comparison today.
The very title of this thread is nauseatingly emotive and its content offers nothing new atall.

Belgians have maintaned a healthier, Hardier dog, as have the Dutch, through their rigorous Breeding & Testing formats
Ring & Mondio, are nothing like Schutzhund, today
But decades ago, they were almost identical
Yes, the club can encourage that dogs go only to working homes. And that all dogs are tested, mandatory, as they once were, BEFORE being bred.
Abolish the SchH Sport, enforce a mandatory BREED Test, as Germany does for the JGHV, who has to test/title/license their hunting dogs, through their parent Breed Clubs in German & and much of Europe
Its real simple.
But done this way, takes the MONEY Out of Dogs, and much of the egos too.
It becomes about the dogs and thats why thered be great opposition to it. Yet, this is exactly how it USED to be done

Uglydog, you say:
Yes, the club can encourage that dogs go only to working homes. And that all dogs are tested, mandatory, as they once were, BEFORE being bred.
Abolish the SchH Sport, enforce a mandatory BREED Test, as Germany does for the JGHV, who has to test/title/license their hunting dogs, through their parent Breed Clubs in German & and much of Europe
We are trying to implement some of what you mention here in the UK but I, personally, would vote against any move to prevent the general public et al from owning our breed. It's too creepy imo and smacks of "selection", I'd want no part of that!
As far as I'm aware there is, however, no crisis.

There is a Crisis..just give it time
Screening is good, Selction is Good, Discretion is good, Strict Standard is Good
Free for all, is Not good.
Chaos reigns in that environment
by missbeeb on 30 January 2009 - 17:01
Never mentioned a free for all, Uglydog... but "selection" is bad news imo... that's been tried... who's to say who's fit to have what? That's a dictatorship!
