Do not always agree with Two Moons, but i agree here,i think what he is trying to say he doesn't have any major health problems. Have to say,and i count my blessings,i don't either. Have had numerous bitches over the years, never had one spayed, never had a problem.Had one male done, due to aggression issues,he was 3 years old,it solved his problem, went on,as all my dogs have, well in to thier teens. Everything has become soo scientific,if it's not spaying,it's dog food ingredients,so mind boggling. liz

Susanandthek9's....fantastic info. I am going to hurry to the nearest brain surgeon to have my brain removed. After all, if I leave it where God put it, I could get a tumor.

LOL, Jenni

My sisters Shit zu was spayed at six months, due to the kind suggestion of her vet and she just had to be put to sleep from breast cancer at the age of 9.

I'd wait until the dog was mature, as I am going to wait with my girl.  It is darn annoying being quizzed by the vet at every appointment as to when I want this done though.   I get the feeling he is more worried about his financial statement, than my dog.

The question of when to spay or neuter is one that every vet wants to get into with a person.  It's a good money maker for them--costs very little, quick to do, and pays fairly well.  I would be extremely concerned with getting it done before full maturity, and if it didn't need to be done, then I wouldn't.

Aside from the breeding concerns, there is the issue of hormones and their effect on maturing.  Those hormones do so very much more than make a bitch fertile.  If your vet pushes you further, just do what I do when a doctor (dog or human) starts pushing me to do something I don't see a need for.  Just tell him or her that you have researched the subject, and have determined that it is not in your (or your dog's) best interest to proceed with their recommendations, and that you do not appreciate the scare tactics being used.  Let them know that you see right through the marketing ruse.  Your dog's health depends on your judgement, and you owe it to your dog to investigate EVERYTHING.

For all you folks that would not spay or neuter, you  will be in trouble if you live in one of the cities that are heading towards mandatory spay/neuter laws on most all dogs.  With the money that PETA, SPCA, humane societies, and other animal activist groups, Hollywood movie stars are pumping into their agenda, we will not have this basic freedom for long.

Having said that, I do not neuter unless their is a real need such as health, and I do not like to spay until after maturity.  I am not real hard fast on the female spay, but one thing I am set in stone on is the government telling me what to do with my own animals.
