I didn't realise that my initial post would generate this much activity and that this is such a widespread problem.  Arnie appears to be calming down slightly at the moment.  His eyes no longer look like he's done 12 rounds with Mike Tyson.  We are treating him with 10mg of antihystamine twice a day and anti-bacterial tablets prescribed by the vet to take care of any skin infections brought about by his scratching.  We haven't bathed him (hes only ever had 2 baths in his life) as we thought that may increase rather than reduce the irritation.  We're also just street walking him at the moment and staying out of the fields, much to his disappointment.

We will try the various vitamins and oils suggested, Darcy you mention Bicom, what is that?  Shame there is no miracle cure, its so sad to see his whole skin contract and move when you so much as stroke him.

Thanks again for all your suggestions
