i think sable gsds look more like belgian shepherds and have drifted away from the traditional look of the gsd. These days there are soo many variations in the breed that it has become dificult to recognise a pure bred gsd just by looking at it. To make sure it is pure we have to look at its ancestry. what are your thoughts? are'nt these variations ruining the breed? sable, liver, plush, long haired, short coat with a plush, roached, working, big bone e.t.c.

You're kidding, right?  Sable  German Shepherds look more like Belgian Shepherds?  Have you not looked at the "founding" dogs of the breed.  There were  black sables, sables, black, and I even remember seeing a bi color back in the early 1900s.

the point is that the traditional look of the gsd is being ignored(the black and tan straight back well propotioned look).

by GSDguy08 on 19 April 2012 - 17:04

So, every dog that founded the breed was black and tan? Someone needs to go back and look at the old pedigrees again.  I'm not arguing about the back being straight or not being point is that there "were" sables, black sables, etc that helped found the breed.  My black sable puppy has a very straight back even when stacked.

You're ruining the breed GSDGuy. Everyone go out and buy a black and tan! Support your backyard breeder also.

I cannot agree to this. There is NO way my sable looks like a Belgian shepherd!
How is this dog straying from what a gsd is?

by DDRCzechFan on 19 April 2012 - 17:04

Whoa whoa whoa, those are FIGHTIN' words, pal!

I whole heartedly agree with GSDGuy08, look at your precious showline's ancestors, the FOUNDING dogs WERE sables...HELLO?!

Tell ya what, YOU can keep your over angulated, ass on the ground hock walking black and tans, and I'll keep my straight backed, ready to work, STRUCTRUALLY SOUND GSD's, deal?

***EDITED TO ADD: Not ALL showlines are overangulated, hock walkers, nor all all Sables straight backed, ready to work or structurally sound, the point I was trying to make was this, a dog's color has NOTHING to do with working ability, and as was probably obvious by both GSDGuy08 and myself, there are a few who PREFER the sables****

I want a big boned liver shepherd, I don't like the bird boned ones though I hear they can fly if they have plush coats.

Some nice ugly dogs there!

Can you say "Rin Tin Tin"...This is where the concept of the Black & Tan (Saddle Backs) came into focus and this is still what a lot of people think the German Shepherd should look like...
All the Colors that you mentioned are ones that have always been there...The Livers aren't good for the breed...I believe they have other genetic faults that go along with them...
Coated German Shepherds have always been there too...It's just that most breeders wouldn't advertise them because they weren't really accepted by AKC...But they've always been there...It's part of the breed...
Actually I've been told by some old Germans that have been around the breed for a very long time that the Sable GSD is actually the basis of the German Shepherd...So it might be that the other colors are actually out of the Sables not the other way around...
