Black poop - Page 1

  
    I have 4 shepherds and the all eat raw,as of the last couple of days my 7 month old bitch has the stangest looking poop.It is
 very black and kinda look like dirt,kinda clumpy and not dry and not moist but inbetween..Any one know why her poop looks like this and
should i have some concerns.Thank yous in advance..

Mine make green crap when they get fresh venison, but black to me means blood.
What kind of meat are you feeding?

Honestly could be anything but here are my thoughts. These are just things I know by my dogs but don't take them solely as yours without checking things out.

Dirt or swamp mud. Or the mud that sits in the forest/woods and is mucky. Don't know where you live, don't know where the dogs go? What's funny, (and I hope others do it?) But I watch where my dogs go, I watch where and when they go to the bathroom, (BREAK), and at times I "separate" their stools. If something doesn't look right or is just a plain mess I definitely separate then. Was taught this in K9 school and do it to all my dogs. The problems I encounter come from the GF because at times she just lets them go without watching them. Then when they're sick, throwing up, or crapping all over the place and I ask where have they been or what did they get into, she doesn't have an answer. 

Just yesterday morning I noticed something "different" so I "separated" the stools and viola, a baby's sock! A few weeks back I was just getting in from work getting ready for bed, (@ 0500 hrs) and just as the lights went off I heard a noise. Couldn't tell if it was a throwup or diareah noise but I quickly turned on the light and there on the comforter was a pile of something, BLACK. It was semi-solid and at first I honestly thought it was a small animal. Nothing fazes me but the smell, this smell I couldn't put my finger, (or nose) on it. But it was wicked. Cleaned it up. Now the dogs were kenneled the day before all day or with me. I went to work so something happened while I was at work. Went back to bed and I hear my male upchuck. I jump up and turn on the light and there was a pile of the same stuff. So now I know it is throw up. So now we have two of the dogs doing this. The GF has no idea what it could be. She opened the back door and let the dogs out and had no idea where they went. "Maybe they went next door and got into their trash" she says.  So I grab a flashlight and walk around out doors looking for something they could have gotten into. I saw some mud holes with claw marks and teeth marks and gully where they had eaten mud but not sure if that was the real cause. The next day I went looking through the woods looking for dead carcasses but only saw swamp mud areas where it looked like they were at. I went back and "separated" the mess and without a microscope I could only make out a mudlike substance and cut grass. But that smell was wicked. The dogs were well the next day So I never figured it out 100%.

Black and tarry is blood from small intestine, usually. Red blood is large intestine, usually (there are exceptions, but dark and black is often more serious). Does your dog eat dirt ever? I had one dog (pup) go through a dirt-eating stage and it came out much like it went in. 

Also, as Melissa mentioned, a lot of organ can do that sometimes. 

Any additional info would help.

Yikes...you need to get that gf under control, LOL. 

My 6 month old likes to eat the ashes from the fire - charcoal and that gives her black poos.

I am going through this now.My pup (14wks old) eating dirt and she gets liver from time to time. When I said she gets liver it's not much, She sees me fixing it for my older female so of course I have t mix in her food.Because she won't touch hers if I don't.Now if I just give the older one kibbles then Cybil has no problems eating her kibbles.lol
Now why is it pups feel like they have to eat dirt? Cybil will just start digging like no tomorrow and when she gets a hole about 4 inches deep time to start eating it.

Could it be that dogs on raw that eat dirt are probably trying to add fiber to thier diet as wild canines will sometimes do when they eat the fur of their kill for the same reasons. Only a idea.
