You're welcome, DoRight. I wear extended wears and only take them out once a week. Can't see without them either.

I think you'll find the SV rules very complete and clear. They make good sense to me assuming they are enforced.

Blitzen now we know why 8 is the magic #. Of course they aren't going to say litter of 12 healthy pups and we culled 4 so now it's 8 healthy pups. We just don't hear about the other 4, they get swept under the carpet so to speak. I'm not as squeemish as you when it comes to culling and it does happen more often than you would think. It is hard to think about when you are on the terms of cute litle baby pups but it is better for the breed in the end. With the world softening up or just $ hungry for the profit the 4 other pups could bring, this be one more reason we see more, less than desireable dogs in circulation.

I have a small observation to interject here----Say a foster female is made available to help feed a litter of 11.  I have to wonder if breeders are careful about utilizing the actual mother's milk supply during the first three days of life.  Each pup needs that initial colostrum for immunity. (Placing a couple newborns on a foster teat isn't too bright IMO.)

Amen, 4pack, As Lauper always says - money, money changes everything.

I really don't have a problem euthanizing pups with deformaties or health issues, but I wouldn't put down a puppy for a minor thing like a kinked tail or too much white. I'd have it neutered and place it as a pet.

LMH, the "fostering" need not done before the pups are 10 days old per the SV rules.

Even in this country, culling doesn't always mean keeping unwanted pups to sell as pets.

When I was bringing my puppy, Star, home from the breeder last April, I stopped at a rest stop on the interstate to walk my dogs. I met a lady with 2 pomeranians, one a darling little pup. She said she'd just adopted the pup from a shelter. Someone had dumped it there at the age of 2 days, because the bitch had too many pups!    I've heard this also happens to labradoodle pups who don't have the desirable non-shedding poodle type coat.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to breed. I'd love to sterilize that breeder's dogs. Then, I'd do the job on the breeder, too!

Can we cull the breeders?  I think there are too many breeders out there that think that just because a male is OFA and has a title that you can pair him up with any OFA titled bitch.  "Well, I met the requirements, didn't I?"    Most of the dogs on this site are garbage.  There are some good ones, some great and a few excellent dogs being offered.    Just because a dog has a SCH 3 doesn't mean that it should be bred.  If it got a score of 70-70-80 and courage was not pronounced, do you think that is breedworthy?    Too many people out there that rely on what is considered the norm.  People can't look at the dogs themselves and make their own evaluations.  It's like a bunch of sheep breeding dogs.

Culling the breeders! Great idea, Don! We'll start with the puppy millers!

In the SV you are allowed to leave all the puppies with the bitch, it is advisable to get a foster mother if there are over 8.  We have a contact address that we call if we have over 8 pups, people with bitches having less than 6 register their bitches there and the contact is made.  In fact, the foster mother can be any breed, even a mixed breed if it is at least 50 cm big.  The whole foster moither litter is watched by  the breed warden to ensure everything is done correctly, with 8 weeks they are brought back to the breeder to be tattoed with the rest of the litter.  If you decide to let the mother nurse more than 8 pups because you didn't find a foster mother, you have to skip the next heat of the mother before breeding again, that is, 6 months from the dob of the pups the mother isn't allowed to be mated again.

Don

You have some good points.

Isnt schutzhund supposed to be a breed survey?  So, there should not be a quetion of whether to breed a Sch 1 dog.

If a dog is not breed worthy it should not have a sch 1.

But, it seems the show dogs and sport dogs have changed things a bit..

Schutzhund should go back to being a breed survey.  If the the dog is not breed worthy no title...thats it.

Now...to keep the sport soccer moms and dads happy who have to "compete"  create a sport for them....just like schutzhund is now.  You could have a (sport schutzund  title) SSch 1,2 or 3.....that will have no bearing on the dog being breed worthy.  Of course these sport dogs would have to come from parents that passed the breed survey.
