My dogs are chipped and tattooed.  I too, am not worried about the article on the risks.  What doesn't cause cancer in lab mice and rats!  I chipped them after Katrina and I live in NJ.  :)  But we do have a hurricane risk here too, more like friggin Noreasters mostly though.  Plus you never know what can happen.  We live rather close to NYC and I was freaking out during 9/11 when I was stuck at work.  Newark Airport is only about 7 minutes away from us.   We still don't have a very good disaster plan.  Though we should.

BTW, home again is supposed to be coming out with a more universal scanner.  Right now, the one out reads the Home Again chips and the Avid chips.  They will also put another company's chip number in their system now as well.

If I were to ever breed, I would want the dog to have a permanent ID, probaby both.  I would like to be contacted if that dog were ever lost, given up, etc.

Rezkat5's last comment is exactly what I was thinking about when I had concerns about this breeder.  I would think that a breeder would want to identify the pups they produce in order to limit the chance of any one of them ending up in a shelter with no identification at all.

Especially in the case of this breeder who seems to have 3 or 4 litters advertised on a continuous basis.

And that is why we do both at 7-weeks.  And I register them with Avid myself.  The new owner can transfer them but I want to make sure they are recorded.

I want to make sure they are recorded.

That is a big problem with chipping in general.  People not registering the chip with Home Again or Avid or whoever it is.  We've just now through Home Again have started a new program that we at the vet clinic send in the registration.  Thus hopefully increasing the number of dogs/cats registered.  They can trace the chip to who purchased that lot number, but that's about as far as it goes.  We had to search through a bunch of records recently for a cat that was found with an unregistered chip that traced back to us.

The local low cost vet clinics around here used to cost $17.00 for a chip and you had to mail in and pay another $10.00 to register, they must have realized how many people are not finishing the process, because they are now also doing the entire process for $30.00.

I think that the home again rep told us that it was something like 50% were not registered after being chipped.
