From looking at pedigrees in the past, I have noticed that when either the dam or sire is black and silver, there is a white dog
in the pedigree, I'm talking real black & silver, not black & cream....................

Years back I almost purchased a dog from Snowcloud kennels   ( Don't get me wrong, they were VERY nice people and I liked all the obedience titles there dogs had earned!)     , they had alot of different colors including a complete
silver German Shepherd, but then again, that's when I stayed focused, and said, what is the standard of the German
Shepherd dog, and when does it stop becoming a German Shepherd???

From where I sit, after viewing Snowcloud, I would say she has some beautiful, happy dogs... and kids.  (Purists beware and pet lovers rejoice!)

Thank you for responding. I have not been on here for a long time and just now got the responses. Thank you for all of them. I found a man who has German Lines here in my area and his always throw off solid black and black and silver. So I found a black and silver female and bought her. So thank you guys for all the help and for responding!!

Every German Shepherd has white dogs in its pedigree!  They were amongst the very 1st bloodlines of the originators.  True white is a mask, a marking much like it is in horses - a "cremello" is a "white" horse, but really is a colored horse whose color has been totally overrun by the white markings - no longer just stripe or bald face or even pinto, but totally taken over by those markings!  It has NOTHING to do with the "color" baseline.

As for "dilute" - silver is NOT a dilution.  Only blue and liver are dilutes - if they show blue/liver points (nose, nails) or mottled thereof.  Again, silver will not dilute whatever you breed to.  Just that it might show up as another random possibility.

BTW, I would not say black & silver is an "American" thing.  The show types prefer better colors.  My dog - a mere black & tan (perish the thought - the basic color!) - was not good enough for them (or the Germans).  But they won't pooh-pooh it altogether.  I think people are confusing common pet dogs in America with "American show" dogs.
