Black Spots on your dogs tongue? - Page 4

All four of my dogs have black spots. My husband, who is a good ole boy, said the same thing about the dogs with the black spots being smarter. But then his Louisiana Ditch dog has them too...go figure

Hi, I also have GSD's that have black spots on their tongues.  I was told that it is an old wives tale but it means the dog is super intelligent.  Of course, I heard that back when I had tiny little Maltese...  heehee.  Now what part of them could have been Chow?  I prefer to believe those black spots are pure intelligence showing through.  How about you?

Almost every GSD I have owned has has the black spot.  That's like someone telling me that my dog isn't pure because it's all black....they insist that it must be mixed with Lab! LOL  I just laugh and tell them that it's actually miniture poodle! rofl 

Actually I mentioned the black spots on a GSD's tongue, back when the thread started with a pic of a "red" alleged GSD in a wooden cage.  I was trashed for even asking whether this alleged red GSD had any black spots on its tongue, so I just dropped it.

Several (many?) breeds of dogs have black spots now and then, but then again, most all dog breeds are inter-related so that makes sense.  There are several old wives tales concerning these black spots.  I have met some who think that if a GSD does not have a black spot or more, they are not pure bred GSD's, and I have heard the "means intelligent" thing also.  Personally, I do not think that it means anything, but if it does mean something, I would take an educated guess that it has to do with pigment.  .

My question would be of those that have raised wolfs and coyote.  Do either of them have black spots, now and then, or always?

Had an uncle who had a couple of black spots on his tongue.  He wasn't very bright.  But then again, neither was his brother, who didn't have any black spots that I know of.

I would not be surprised if ALL GSD's had a black spot or two on their tongue.  Just maybe not where it can be seen easily.

Out of my current 2 dogs 1 has several black spots and the other hasnt, dont believe it is anything to do with intellegence though as some of you stated the one with the black spots has definately got a cognitive impairment very slow on learning new commands and no where near as intelligent as my other dog.

Ive always been told black spots are a GSD's birthmark - hence some having them and some not.  I've got and have had dogs with them and dogs without - no difference in intelligence either way.  I think the possibility of good pigment being carried in the gene's is a more likely option.  My girl who has very visible black marks lacks good pigment herself has siblings with very good colour - seems plausible to me.

I have a bitch with a black spot on her tongue,  it mean's nothing.

A black tongue would be a whole different deal all together.

I was Watching Darthez working at our Club before he flew off to the USA for the World Championships

I noticed that he had a Black Spot on his tongue, cannot see anything wrong in that , in fact if he wins the WUSV everyone will want a Dog with a black spots on its tongue
