KCzaja,

"Well, that was an intelligent, articulate, and concise way to debate your point, seriously. Then again, I guess people who hide behind and alias can say what they want, and grow the pair they dont have in real life."

You're absolutely right. As stated, I, unlike you, don't really have true freedom of speech. Like Preston trying to find out where I worked, why? So he can complain I was mean to him? BS. In my home, I say what I want. When I'm on duty, I bite my tongue, and regardless of what whoever here thinks, you would never find a single person I have ever dealt with that would tell you I was anything but extremely polite and professional. I do hold myself to a higher standard when I'm at work, because I believe in that. But that's not to say I don't get back in the car sometimes and think "what an idiot." Everyone does, and if they tell you differently, they're lying. I frequently disagree with a lot posted here; the same 10-15 people arguing the same points over and over, just to argue. And these discussions are commonly filled with largely false training and breeding ideas.

Preston wanted to play games off topic. I was trying to get people to step back and actually understand what some of the other story might be. But no one wanted to hear anything other than the onesided claim of one person, which to me did not seem realistic. I have never met a fellow LEO that would simply walk into someone's yard, see a tethered dog, and shoot it for no reason. As far as trying to "push" the dog or "invade" his space, actually quite the contrary. Most of us do all we can to avoid dogs. Personally for me because I respect what job they are doing for their masters. I have lost more than one foot chase because I took the effort to avoid jumping a fence with someone's aggressive dog in it. I simply cannot believe this cop did what is accused.

As always stated, I feel sorry for the dog. However, the cop is not the only one to blame here. And to quickly mount up and purchase another puppy to be tied to a porch is irresponsible. Born of the best of intentions, but not fair to that puppy.

seriously, there have been other similar incidents. Someone just drew my attention to this notorious incident that happened a few years ago in Tennessee:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/01/09/police.kill.dog/index.html

No doubt what happened here, the cops caught the whole thing on video, including the family begging officers to close the car doors so the dog wouldn't escape.

Another poster says she has heard about so many dogs being shot when their owner's cars were stopped by police that she now carries a muzzle in her car, and says she will make sure the dog is wearing it before she rolls her window down. I think she's putting herself at risk by doing this: the officer might thing she's going after a gun.

I couldn't get the video to open...seemed unfortunate though.

All I wanted through all this is to step back and just think that there is probably more to the story than was all let out. There always is. Instead, everyone just went on a big police bash.

No one, is perfect. Police deal with very complex and difficult situations, and inevitably, sometimes shit goes bad. We're people too, you know.

We could all post videos of stuff. I could show you videos of cops being shot on traffic stops they pulled over to help change a tire, and the guy shoots him. I know several of my buddies that have had people's personal dogs sent at them, so they could bide time to flush dope or run, whatever. Etc. Etc. Bad stuff happens. Doesn't mean anyone who isn't a cop is bad, just the same as whatever video above is completely unrelated to this officer on Max's run that day.

None of us were there.

Get a Real Dog:  Thanks for taking the time to respond to my questions.  I appreciate the detailed explanations.  As I'm sure you know, I have no clue about crime scene analysis.  I think people can have a serious discussion on a very emotional issue as long as no one resorts to belittling, patronizing, or name calling.

The thing that unites all of us is we have a real passion for dogs & we want to get to the bottom of this, one way or another.

Oh sure, I'm able to act real civilized until on another thread my buttons are pushed by someone who comes off as a moralistic prude then I come completely unglued and unhinged too!!!!!

Just remember we only hear one side of the story..the other side is a dead dog..

Which is all the more reason to get to the truth behind the actions of ALL involved in this dog's life.  The cop could have been a kneejerk asshole.  The owners could have been ignorant of the simplest idea of dog welfare.  There is no reason to think they aren't BOTH putting a slant (whether conscienciously or unconscienciously) on their version of events.

This innocent dog's life is at least worth the clear truth.

Seriously,  while a few went on a "Police Bash",  Most of us did not,  Most of us suggested that this incident was caused by this deputy making poor choices,  and that what happened to Max should not have happened and did not HAVE to happen,  Yet it did.

The above post is one of your better posts lately,  However I would like to comment on your statement that "in my home I say what I want"   Most LEO will NOT take that stand with you,  As an LEO you are held to a higher standard,  You are looked upon as a leader who SHOULD BE showing the upmost respect, coolness, and Responsibility in any situation presented to you,  weather your on duty, off duty, camping, or BBQing in your backyard,  YOU MUST maintain that higherarchy !!!

Again I'm glad you've settled down enough to post a reasonable post again.  And as I said before I respect that LEO must have a kindred support group,  and I respect your decision to be part of Long's support group.

Dawg,

I agree that very little here is verifiable. At times I comment on a situation that simply does not ring true in spite of my apprehension over the lack of balance, perspective, or credibility in the reporting. I do hope that those investigating this incident will make a public statement of their findings, and I most certainly will modify or retract my statements as it seems appropriate. I am well aware that the truth could prove very different than popular opinion would have it. It is rather a common occurrence. Best Wishes, Jonah

hmmmm....I have a firefighter t-shirt that says, "If you can't stand the heat, become a cop"!  (ONLY joking here people) :-)

The one thing I have not heard is, WHERE THERE ANY SIGNS POSTED THAT THE DOG WAS ON THE PROPERTY?  Was the officer deaf, or the dog trained NOT to bark?  Was the yard fenced in where the dog was?

Although I can truly understand BOTH sides of the story, (what I know of it), I must agree that 7 shots is a little extreme.  Was this officer such a poor shot?  If so, I think he needs more time behind a desk and working at the firing range.

If you REALLY want to make a statement, don't email!  Those can be deleted to easily!  Hit the TV stations, talk show radio, write letters to your representatives, blow out their phone lines with calls!!!  That is bound to get some attention!
