I would skip the internetting until you have a particular breeder and litter in mind.

Better to spend your time at clubs and kennels looking with your own eyes.

ATM you are just new meat for the sharks.

A guy I totally trust in the UK doesn't post much anymore but I will see if I have an email. Also the kennel that made the UK scene less than a laughing stock by doing well at wusv a few years ago are knowledge, you should be able to track them by looking at wusv results, they were breeding from a mannus son that was super nice.

Given your requirements I would look for the most docile pup in a high end sport litter.

Sport dogs are the most versatile and consistent breedings, you just have to rely on variations in the litter to get a more mellow one. Breeder will help if any good.

The real dog crowd are the people in general to avoid along with people breeding specifically for conformation dogs.

I'm not responsible for the Dangerous Dogs Act being on the UK Statute Book, nor for its operation.  But if, down the road, you fall foul of it, Babbles, I think you  might have a little local difficulty persuading those who are, that your Personal Protection Dog is 100% discriminating in all circumstances, and that you keep a dog trained to bite because he will deter anyone you think may have criminal intent from attacking you (and won't actually have to bite and maim said 'criminal').  People whose dogs are sports dogs, in recognised activities, have enough trouble getting the message across.  Good luck with that.

People like you are exactly the ones responsible for those types of laws. They've never trained, they've never taken the time to understand, and they institute those laws. There is an ASL club local to me and they won't allow any bite work on their grounds...even a police dog demo needs board approval. Why? Competition. Make bite work seem dangerous and the enemy = sales for people with black/tan (or in your case black/red) dogs who won't bite a human even if they were beating them in the corner.

You have so little experience with bite sport or actual protection dogs that you can't even read through the OP's request and realize what they're really looking for. Pretty much what most people look for when they claim they want a PPD...a pet that will turn on and bark, and if push comes to shove...take a shot at the bad guy. You've locked on to the fact that the guy wants a "protection dog" in England and how dangerous that can be. I'm sure plenty of people in your country have dogs like this guy is looking for...I'm sure most are imported from Central Europe...I'm sure you don't hear about any of them because they're well trained pets that do their job and deter danger without ever even having to bark or bite anyone.

If you have to ask and want a prospect asap. Find a reputable breeder and let them pick a pup out of the litter for you. If you want to educated yourself, keep reading, go to clubs and speak with owners of working dogs. If you visit clubs you will see all kinds of dogs especially while they are crated. Some never shut up, some settle nicely until it is time to work. Some wait for you to get close to the car or truck then go ballistic. Sounds like you want more of a watch dog than ppd. Frankly you never know what your dog is going to do unless you train scenario for attacks from strangers. Hidden sleeve work and the like. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Want to skip all this drama???? Find a reputable breeder...go see the dogs...FIND A REPEAT BREEDING....speak with those puppy owners and how their dogs turned out and more importantly how honest and accurate the breeder was in assessing the puppy to their needs. You have a family, and a dog that gets along with all of them and friends is paramount. Don't get caught up in "how to raise a working dog". If it is a good dog it can take corrections and learn manners to live with a family. If it needs to be coddled and "not kill its drive" it isn't worth a crap in sport anyway. Worst case scenario you have a great active companion that won't bite...best case you get the complete package. After getting your puppy good consistent socialization and training will enhance good genetics.

Rock solid nerve/temperament should be your priority...then good drives...If you are serious about the protection piece...you will have to go with green dogs and to make it easier...look at males. If by "protection" you want a dog that will keep bad guys out of your house...heck, anything barking on the other side of the door when you aren't home or a big dog bowl outside the front door will often do that!

My advice on breeders...only stick to those that work and title their own dogs...the rest just regurgitate buzz words and the flavor of the month. Just my two cents.
