As i said i know very little, In fact nothing about computers, so i am not going to mess about with it now.
Plus as Bazza says all these sayings of what to do mean nothing to me as well
So we have it seems only two options and that is to put up with the problem or not bother to post
I still cannot understand how so may people can have problems with the site and still be told there is nothing the matter with it and that they must make adjustments on there computers
And i am not going to read through 9 pages of replies and Posts for ithere is nothing wrong with my computer but this forum, So best to  leave it at that

Suggestion to Yellowrose:-

Leave the Avatar alone if you get a good result with the rest of the page, it may be you that is messing up your view, or remove Avatar completly until your other problems are solved
Just a thought that different Size photo of Avatar may be causing problem

If 9,999 people have no problem and 1 does then it must be the database, right

I know this is technical and complex but there may be a lot of valid reasons why you see different pictures depending on where you are..

There are 2 things influencing this.  the Content distribution  and your ISP's caching methods.

Most ISP's run what is called a "Transparent Proxy" for web traffic.  That is to minimize their bandwidth cost, they cache images from the internet so that then ISP user 1 goes to aol.com this ISP proxy server gets all the images serves them to user 1 and caches them on disk.  Then when User 2, 5 minutes later,  goes to aol.com,  this transparent proxy will serve the cached images from its disk rather then downloading them again,  i.e. saving the ISP some bandwidth cost.

When you update you user image here the image does not get a new name,  the name stays the same.

So for YR, her image will always be http://cdn.pedigreedatabase.com/usericon/21384.jpg  no matter what picture she uploads..

So you have to deal with the following process.

PDB server gets the image,  PDB server pings the CDN (Content distribution network) that this image has been updated and asks for it to be retrieved and distributed (this can take a while, few seconds to 60 minutes , since the image pull request goes into a Queue with the CDN company), usually fairly quick though.

After the CDN has pulled the image and redistributed it through out the world.   It starts sending out the correct updated photo.

But ah it does not stop here.  Your own browser uses caching to preserve bandwidth and speed up page loading.   So since the name has not changed your own browser will serve the old picture to save bandwidth (this is when the distortion shows,  this website is giving new height/width coordination for the new picture and your browser is squeezing the old image into that new ratio making the image distorted.

This is normal web behavior and I as a web developer have no influence whatsoever on Anonymous Proxies or your own browser caching methods.

All images have a "life duration" which request proxies/browsers to reget them when the cached images goes over a certain age,    this is normally for websites around a week or 30 days.   Website hosts want to minimize unneeded gets..

So the answer is, The image is correct on the PDB, for actual get request it is serving the new updated image.   You can view the image and append a dummy arbitrary value to break any proxies..

for instance :  http://cdn.pedigreedatabase.com/usericon/21384.jpg?2354129348234123

As long as the value is unique behind the question mark the browser and proxies have to get download the image instead of serving you cached content.

Lennard:

Your analysis is a bit far fetched...In fact  I have seen near 20 people so far have problems in the last 5 weeks..MAny posts have been come and gone and logged in saying I am hving problems  logging in, problems with ads down in the message box and it is not just   1  or 2  of 5 people...

I just think it is funny that for a month  people have complained nicely....no one is faulting Oli...he has his hands full.

Internet is a very complex   'Roll of the DICE"  I am not a dumb blonde ...and I will not keep my mouth shut while some of you call US that are having difficulties for over 2 months now,    IDIOTS>..one or two have...

SO  in a nutshell...IT DON"T MATTER  "    I do not have to have an avitar....I just found it funny that I had 4 yesterday with 4 different pictures all over the usa.....so   no biggy

I can go play TENNIS  and take up a new hobby....I will check in when my computer works and if it doesn't  I will let all the others worry about it... I just  do not back down when I know what I know is right.

It may  not be right for you but I didn't get where I am in this world   BELIEVEING  the MASSES>

NOTHING MATTERS WHEN IT IS ONLY AN OBJECT YOU CANNOT EVEN TOUCH OR FEEL...

No one has called anyone an idiot. One member called a moderator an idiot.

At most their appears to be about 10 people having real problems with a few having Moons same problems. Again I have read most of these and no one called anyone an idiot.  It simply never happened.

As Oli explains. Each computer takes a cache and each ISP takes a cache. All that needs to be done in most cases is a refresh.

If you have 10,000 users and 10 are having assorted/different problems I think it is not the website but each members own computers/ISPs.  After all this is 1% or less of all users.

You say all these people have problems but I have only seen screenshots from 2 people.

Gog fixed his problem like Moons cause he listened and followed directions.

Everytime your computer is screwed up take a pic and then do a page refresh and take a second picture.

People who want help should listen to the site owner / moderators / members who are trying to help instead of posting silly things saying people were called idiots. I will no longer help. You by saying this have made it apparent you do not want my help as I have been the main one helping.

I have checked this site on 12 different computers running all operating systems but mac and I have not seen one problem. I checked it on my iphone no problems.

I give up.
--------------------
Moderator comment: SP is correct in that it was someone who called a moderator an idiot (wasn't the first time and probably won't be the last), not any one, including a moderator calling someone having trouble with the browser content from the PDB. So that should be settled and YR is incorrect on this account.

That being said, perhaps again knowing a little more about how to clear caches on various platforms would be helpful. Out of thousands and thousands of viewers here, a very few are having trouble. Clearly not only Oli, but SP and Lennard have tried and tried to help so that problems are resolved. However, sometimes it is very difficult to do when people are not "speaking the same language". For what it is worth, I see PDB on both platforms and multiple browsers and multiple operating systems and it works very nicely. However, for one thing, one must have a proper monitor resolution set, and secondly, one must also have cleared caches so that old stuff goes away. If you don't understand the cache concept, say so and one of us will help you.

Believe it or not, even some people who work in computer stores do not understand some most basic information about software and internet issues. Further, there are many advances taking place behind the scenes so to speak and to keep up with changing technology is difficult even for people who work in this arena. Fortunately, for most people such changes are "seemless" and one does not even notice. Eventually it will all be worked out. Try to remain patient and ask for help. We will do our best to accommodate everyone who wants to view this site.

Lennard
There never used to be a problem until changes were made on this site, Now there are problems so who's fault is that, not the posters nor should they have to mess with there computers its the problem of the owner to make sure the site is fully functional to all
So you think i am alone with  the problem or as you say one in 10.000 I think it much more widespread than me.
As i said i am a dork with computers i was never bought up with them in my day
All we had was a piece of Paper and a Pencil and our own brain, told to work the answers out Maths , anything, The last couple of generations of Kids, all they work by is adding up machines and Computers.
But take away those Computers and adding up machines and give them a sheet of paper and a pencil, then ask them to do the same work, They would lost as to know much more than to write there own name
By the way were you born within the last two Generations, if so i rest my case

Steve1 technology changes and site owners find new and better ways to do things if people would just listen instead of post stuff they really know very little about.

Changing screen resolution is not hard and will not screw up other programs.

The directions are posted in this thread on page 1 and 4 I think, so you do not need to read all pages but it sure might help and to comment on something you did not read fully seems pretty silly.
