That is what happened off Mexico back in 1979??

When was the last MAJOR oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?
How many wells have been drilled and how many barrels of oil have been pumped since then?

Just curious.

Sitasmom the last major spill in the Gulf was the Ixtoc I oil spill, it exploded June 3, 1979. It is the 2nd largest oil spill in history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixtoc_I

The latest news is Top Kill is working. Adm. Thad Allen of the coastguard claims drilling mud has stop leaking oil and pressure is low www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-oil-spill-stopped-top-kill-link,0,1045555.story I hope this is true but I'll wait to dance until the cement has been poured and the well sealed.

I wonder what the long term effect of all that oil was??

who gets all those profits??

by keepthefaith on 28 May 2010 - 14:05

FWIW, I think the "top-kill" move has failed.

It looks like BP has moved to the "junk-shot" procedure.

Trace can "top-kill" be done in conjunction with the "junk-shot"?

I read yesterday that another leak was detected far from this one, it looks like the pressure is opening it along a vein.

Not the pressure, but the chemicals.
From MSNBC:

"In another troubling discovery, marine scientists said they have spotted a huge new plume of what they believe to be oil deep beneath the Gulf, stretching 22 miles from the leaking well head northeast toward Mobile Bay, Alabama.  They fear it could have resulted from using chemicals a mile below the surface to break up the oil.

believe me, the oil has got me worried, but the chemicals + the oil I think could be worse.

Initially, I misunderstood, they called it a plume and I assumed they meant a new leak.  Evidently this one was dispersed by the chemicals and has traveled in a different direction.  I agree, the chemicals will kill more life than just the oil.
