That is a great idea, beetree! I've put a call in to the Chicago chapter of the Make-a-Wish foundation and I'm waiting for a callback from the person who might have some answers. The time factor may be a problem here, since there is a verification process (as there should be, of course), and it looks like they try to find businesses to donate services rather than having Make-a-Wish pay for them. I don't know how long all this takes. Usually the Make-a-Wish requests are non-urgent. Although Nala's eye problem won't kill her, if the corneal ulcer gets very bad her eye could rupture. So the surgery should happen sooner rather than later. But that was great brainpower on your part, beetree! It's wonderful that you're thinking about ways to help this family.

I don't believe this would qualify for the Make a Wish Foundation.

Susan are you having any progress with talking to anybody? If I were on the board of Make-a-Wish, I would think I would love to help out in this particular way, considering most of the wishes granted involve a trip to Disney World or electronic equipment. And this is half the cost, I checked it out from their 990. There are Dr's on the board, too, and I bet most have pets. They might want to kick in a bit of respite for the family, too, one never knows.
I can't imagine what could be a better wish than for a sick kid and his parents, to keep the dream of a boy and his dog. If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that in life, there are always exceptions. Never be afraid to be the one asking for that exception.

Again,
I don't think this falls within the guild lines of the Make a Wish Foundation's requirements, no harm in asking tho.
Yeah,
I'd like an update as well.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!
No luck with the vet surgeon Nala saw yesterday morning. He will not do the surgery at any kind of discount. The economy has been very hard on vet specialists, especially surgeons, and this is probably the reason.
No luck with Make-a-Wish either. The minimum age for the child is 2 1/2 years, and Cody is only about 1 1/2 years old.
Now—here’s the good news!
First, Nala’s corneal ulcer has healed. This is because her people have been so great about getting the artificial tears into her eyes. This has allowed the ulcer to heal even though she still does not produce any tears.
And—we have found a vet who will do the surgery for $900 per eye (total $1800). He will do the surgery one eye at a time. The vet is none other than Dr. Rudowski at Fox Lake Animal Hospital. Thank you, KCzaja, for recommending him!
Nala needs the surgery ASAP. If another corneal ulcer develops , her eye could rupture. She has also started squinting in pain again. For this reason, and because I have a lot of faith in the kind-hearted folks here who have offered to help, we have scheduled surgery on Nala’s right eye for Wednesday, March 31.
That gives us 12 days to raise the $900 needed for the first surgery.
Here’s how to help. Make a check out for the amount you want to donate to FOX LAKE ANIMAL HOSPITAL. Write FOR NALA’S EYE SURGERY in the memo part. Then send the check to Nala’s people. Do not send it to Fox Lake Animal Hospital. They told me that they are a very busy practice and they would not be able to keep track of the donations. Instead, please send the check to Nala’s people. Here’s the address to send the check to:
Sherdell and Beverly Cawvey
292 Evergreen Circle
Gilberts, IL 60136
Nala’s people will keep me updated on the amount of the checks, which I’ll report regularly to this thread, so we’ll know how the donations are going. Because you’re making the check out to the animal hospital, you’ll know it won’t be misused.
Bless all of you who have offered to help! Now we can really make a difference in the life of a disabled boy, his sweet GSD buddy, and their family.

OK, my small donation is sent. Keep us posted on amount collected. If I can, when the second eye is ready for surgery, I will try to send an additional small amount. If all of the old timers here would send $25 or so, I bet we can come up with the necessary amount for the surgery. Come on folks, a $5.00 or even a dollar, or $25 or more can make a real difference in the lives of the people involved and the dog. Just do it!
I want to amend my post also to remind everyone that Susan here has stepped up to see that the first bill for an appointment and medications was paid for, to the tune of $600. I suggest that IF there is any excess, that Susan be also repaid for at least part of her great generosity. I doubt that she has lots of money sitting around......... Together we can make a difference.
