Looks like the pup is on the way to recovery. I am posting this to benefit of others. with tongue in cheek I call this vicious puppy syndrome. It is caused by weak, confused, permissive and overly positive owners. Owner needs to change attitude under guidance of common sense trainer. . Dog like this needs +/- training with all 4 pillars of training involved. Training must be done by the owner under gudance of trainer. Positive and negative reinforcement and positive and negative punishment. People need no nonsense dog trainer. In NYC I would recommend funny no nonsense guy Peter Cain

I was doing it all wrong. I'm a bit wiser now and Kahn is almost getting to push button status. My new puppy is trained in this manner. It makes a world of a difference

Most dog issues are human caused, either through how the human treats them or how the human created the lineage. I would definitely recommend a certified animal behaviorist to find out what is going on (no Cesar Milan dominance crap either). The family may not be the best for that puppy. GSDs are not dogs to be taken lightly or to be dominated. I hope the problem is found and solved in a manner that is beneficial to all..........

Prager, honestly curious, what is the difference between positive and negative punishment? Positive and negative reinforcement I get from a behaviorist point of view, but I have not heard of positive punishment.....

Words "Positive" and "negative" do not refer to if the action feel pleasantly of not. It refers to adding or subtracting something. Positive punishment : basically correction on the leash and other such acts.( adding correction)
negative punishment: is removal of by the dog desired reward until the dog complies ( removing something desired as punishment)
Positive reinforcement: Adding reward.
negative reinforcement: removing certain pressure as a reward . For example if you choose use negative reinforcement to teach down you would them apply communicative downward pressure onto the dog's leash. This pressure is not punishing but not necessarily desired by dog . As soon as the dog starts yielding to such pressure you then immediately remove the downward pressure as a reward.
Thus surprisingly to many negative reinforcement is positive (feel good)
Positive punishment is negative (feels unpleasant)
Negative punishment which sounds the most harsh is actually positive ( feels good after the dog responds)
And of course positive reinforcement feels good...which is usually the only one people get right.
Reinforcement then increases behavior/
Punishment decreases occurrence of the behavior.

video is an unrelenting load of over-generalised crap.
If he makes ads like that, I wouldn't trust him within 5
miles of any dog I was training, GSD or otherwise.
Yes there are ineffective companies/trainers, yes some
of them have ridiculous names, yes many of them do
not distinguish between types of dogs and would be
much better sticking with small companion breeds and
making it clear the big working breeds are beyond them,
but to lump all 'positive reinforcement' training together
as Caine does is bloody dishonest. Not to mention his
underwhelming, plain wrong, description of the method
itself. Shame on you for posting that !

The confusion about positive and negative is that the obedience has stages and they need to me positive or positive and negative
1st stage is learning stage which needs to be positive . Now remember that negative reinforcement is actually positive - feels good when the dog responds. Thus it must be used during learning stage. So during learning stage we use all pillars, except positive punishment - which is your correction and is totally negative.
2nd , 3rd and 4th stages are as follows , conditioning, practicing and working stage. They all 3 must use all 4 pillars of training.
Also remember the most important thing about obedience . Obedience does teach dogs - eh well obedience, but most importantly it enables you to establish leadership position which IMO is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF TRAINING YOUR DOG FOR EVERY DAY LIFE.

hundmutter you trusting to someone is your decision. But save your arbitrary throwing of shames around . His videos are for entertainment and they are really funny and for promotion and not for training, they are just his opinions. They are totallu not PC and I love him for it ven though I do not agree on some of it. As far as I know he is an excellent dog trainer with excellent common sense. But how would you know? You have never seen him to train a one dog and have seen one or two or so videos yet you are instant expert on his training and believe that that gives you right to throw shames accross the ocean like a god. I do not agree with him on everything but I agree with him on more then I would with most other trainers.

^^^Being committed to 'all 4 pillars' / if a trainer cheerfully announces that he is 'positive only', turn and run.
That goes JUST as much for someone who is entirely condemnatory about 'positive' methodology, doesn't it ?
0r do you think its okay to slag off a whole group of
practitioners in one fell swoop, just cos you don't approve
of THEIR methods ???
Let's take a different tack, and address his actual video
- if you are sure you are able to keep reading (!!) ?
He tells us to beware of the training services advertised by
anybody saying they use 'Positive methods only', with NO
acknowledgement that positive reinforcement IS still one of
the 'tools' of dog training, to lesser or greater degree depending on both the Trainer and the dog. He lumps
everybody together under his "You can tell them by their
silly names" method - bullshit, you know and I know there
are trainers/training classes with completely sensible and
straightforward names who can still do untold damage.
Just as there are "yank & crank" idiots practising who use
soft and fluffy advertising. [Please note: NOT accusing you
of that !] Craine would be better off giving some advice to
dog owners on how to visit and assess trainers for their
methods and results, than this unhelpful slagfest, which
appears just to be designed to frighten people (and HE
fails to make any distinction between whether they just
want a decently behaved companion dog, or a fully fledged
PPD) so that they will use him instead.
