Unfortunately I would consider myself an unwilling expert on dog bites since I got bitten 89 times in my life which is about 2 x per year. More earlier in my life then now.  I am counting only bites penetrating the skin. I also used to be EMT. Thus here is what I do. I am not a doctor and I  am telling you what I do and not what you should do. The most important part when I get bitten and if I am  not bleeding arterially or have bones sticking out or the bite did hit the bone or parts of my tissue is flapping around the wound in larger chunks ( in these cases I go to a doctor)  is to make sure that I clean my would as best as I can. I am using at first moderate stream of tap water, then I use an alcohol, then iodine and then I dissolve 1 table spoon of bleach in 8 oz of water and wash it with that.  Then I wash it again with gently running tap water. Pack it with neosporin. Then put on it loose dressing. Then I keep it elevated to subdue the pain. Generally I do not go to doctor for just about any bite but I watch it carefully for infection. Tenderness, puss, bubbles (God forbid).....  Also I make sure that  dog is not rabid or suspicious of rabies possibility. I always keep watching the dog for the signs of rabies for 2 weeks.  If you keep the would clean than it will heal faster.
If you have no drugs; best pain suppression is elevation.

Hey, my wrist looks like that right now!

Doctor, schmoctor. I always soak my bites three times a day in warm water and epsom salt for about twenty minutes each time and I've never gotten an infection. I get a good puncture a few times a year, usually I just get nasty bruises.

I love all the prognosis of what should become of a dog we've never seen, based on an incident we didn't see, written by one person's take on why the dog did it.

I believe that just about every dog has its work somewhere for him. This one in area protection service?

Sorry to hear you got bit, GSDtravels. If the dog's teeth nicked the bone, the area must be colorful by now.  I hope it heals up well.

I'm doing okay, healing nicely.  It aches a bit but has gotten better every day.  It's staying dry so no infection, which would be my biggest concern.  I was at a family function all day yesterday and got by with Advil and a loose dry bandage.  I also spoke to the owner again and I think she was expecting a lawsuit, I guess that's the norm.  But all is well, thanks for asking.

OMG, so sorry to hear about this GSDtravels. I wish you a speedy recovery. My guess is that Drake will forgive losing his daily romps temporarily until you're on your feet again....hopefully that will be soon. Take care & watch for infection!

Take good care, Lady. I have the mate to that injury on my left leg. My bites ALWAYS get infected. This one left a hell of a scar, split the muscle, chipped the bone on both sides. Now I have a depression on that leg, loks like hell.

Sounds like you've got it under control. Keep up the good work.

Hmmm.... I see someone has zapped my posts. Typical. We're in the land of sock puppets, where these things happen!

I got my thumb chewed so bad years ago that I was afraid I'd have to have a skin graft. The skin looked really dead in one area where there was not much of any blood supply, and when I unwrapped it, it smelled like rotting meat. But, I used something quite different than anything mentioned on this thread and it healed 100%. No oral or topical antibiotics, no stitches and no doctor, no medical bill.. I had health insurance. I frankly just didn't want to go through all the BS of reporting a dog bite (and risking getting the dog in trouble, when it was really my fault).

Well, I'm not going to tell you all what I used. LOL.. I know nuthin', right? I've also used the same stuff to clear up very aggressive drug resistant staphylococcus areus skin infections which were spreading rapidly and refused to respond to anything else.. A few weeks ago, I heard of a doctor in Haiti using the same approach to stop gangrene from starting in extremity wounds.. OH.. I forgot.. I know nothing, right? So, you all can figure it out for yourselves. ;-)
