Shelly:

If your transmission is a 700r4 junk it it won,t make a trip out west on a partial rebuild. There very heat sensetive and the frt seal in the pump is a joke under stress. You may not want to hear that but it,s better to hear it now.

700r4????
Huh???  LOLOLOL

Shelley's Knowledge of Transmissions (complete)

A trasmission is a part between the engine and the wheels someplace (different places on different vehicles) that make the car move different speeds without making the engine turn at the same speed as the wheels.
The only other one that ever broke on me was on my 1986 class C motorhome in 91 or 92. Two days after I had it towed to Aamco in Albeguerque the receipt for $1200, said it was a C6.

i did see a transmission in pieces on a bench once. It looked like a puzzle with a lot of wide, thin round-ish pieces (with chunks cut out of them) some things that had to be gears off to the side in a bucket,  and a thing that looked like a cool maze for beetles or rats or something little like them.

The round things with teeth on them were probably clutch plates and the maze looking thing probably the valve body. If you do decide to use that trans to get you there price the largest external tranny cooler you can get and have it installed. It should not be more then 75.00 dollars to buy installation isn,t hard either.

OK. The shop owner called just now. Here's what I wrote down from the conversation-
The van ran out of gas in the driveway of the shop when they went to move it indoors. The 1/2 tank of gas it burned in the last 50 miles was a clue something was wrong.

Yes- Its a 700 hydromatic transmission.
Yes- it needs rebuilt
3-4 clutch packet (whatever that is) burnt out.
No bad "hard parts" like drums, gears
Does need new bands, clutches, seals
Shop didn't have all the parts in stock, but should be delivered (new) this afternoon/evening.
All three generations of transmission family will work extra hours to put her back together, also do something with that exhaust leak and try to get the heater/fan to work right.

Should be done tomorrow afternoon or thursday morning, depending on parts arrival.

Normal cost $1536.42, but they knocked off $100. labor because I am in a bad spot and they aren't too busy right now.
It is said locally that Mr's Durr do a very good job, good folks. Mr Durr promised me the tranny he sends me off with will not let me down the rest of the trip or for a long time in future. He also agreed with Bob that the 700 hydro series is one of the crummiest (is that a word????) units ever made, and its a bear to find replacements when they go, which they always do. Weakest link, etc.
He said next time buy something with a good old C6. His grand kids can rebuild those in about 2 hrs. with parts on hand. Ha ha ha.

Thanks for all your kind words, humor and support. I never meant this to be some kind of freaking SAGA when I ran out the door with my tail on fire last... July?!

Watch out for PETA! They are on a move to ban using horses to draw carriages...wow, if they find out you're dreaming of using horses to haul dogs, god KNOWS how they would react....

Shelly:

Make sure he puts in the upgraded frt seal support from G.M. Price sounds like a good deal Russ Moore here in Indiana 1850.00 Installed. You can make that tranny better with what they call a corvette pack but it,s expensive. Make sure that includes a new tork converter. and flush the cooler in the radiator.

Good luck Shelley & God bless!  Transmissions basically suck....& what they suck is $$$! That's all I know about them! From the gears on my 10 speed as a kid to my current vehicles, when you live in hilly country, the tranny always seems to be the part that goes first. Carl & I discussed letting you use his conversion van BUT the tranny was fried! Would have cost about $4500.00 to make it work right. Soooooo...... I send my prayers! jackie harris

Hey girl, I could call my Aunt and see if she'd be up for having you in for at least a home cooked meal.  She housed me when I left town, she was my "jumping off" point.  She's a wonderful cook and a fabulous Hostess.  Let me know if you're interested and I'll give her a call.  Have you made it through "the cut" on 68?  If not, get your camera ready, it's pretty cool.  Wonderful rock formations there, all sideways, like they just erupted out of the ground.  Might as well enjoy what you can while you're there.  In downtown there's a pretty cool trail that runs through the C&O Canal towpath, nice place to walk the dogs.

Home cooked meal GSD travels? Company and conversation?
YESSS!!!!

I am afoot of course.

I don't know if I went through The Cut or not Thursday night. The few miles I have actually made it on this trek were made in the dark.

My cell phone number hasn't changed in 10 yrs, hopefully never will- 610-392-7197

Company would be much appreciated after nearly a week of dogs only.
Humans are naturally fairly social creatures (most of us anyway). Auntie shelley is no exception.

Auntie Jackie and sweet,Carl, with his 1 million+ yr old soul, are two of the very few people I started missing when first this journey began last summer. Their kind of energy, however, transcends miles and time like they don't even exist.
