Hi there,
I have read this thread and have to agree with all of you. Everybody has a valid point here.
But I would like to add something as well:
You can not compare different V-rated dogs and their prices, which could range from $ 5,000 to $ 100,000 or maybe even more. There is the female who received her V-rating at the local club show (which might have been a present from the judge, or not) and then, there is the V-10 female from last year's Sieger Show. If you check around in Germany and read ads in the SV magazine or on GSD boards, you could find females for $ 5,000. But I can assure you that the top producing and/or top placing females (if they are for sale) will not be found that way. These do not need to be advertised. They are sold from word to mouth or with Vitamin B (a German term for Beziehungen - Connections).
If you do not have these connections or the money to pay the (exhorbent) prices some of the wellknown kennels or brokers charge, your best bet is to buy a quality female for a reasonable price from a smaller breeder. These breeders have only limited kennel space (because they do not have all these other people on the team like big breeders) and therefore, they depend on selling their females after a couple of litters to make room for the young and upcoming ones.

A British Racing Green eh? have to check that out :)
Silbersee, I agree with your assessment, I have no contacts myself...but someday dream of having many! lol.
I really would not dare to challenge the value of adult proven dogs, a proven dog is worth it's weight in gold for the potential that it can impart on further generations.
SGBH, I agree with you also...I could buy a nice $900 dog and do the training myself (which I admit would not be great, I have a rather subdued, quiet personality...slow and easy for me, I make good mannered household pets, not upbeat obedience dogs). But there is a difference between nice and great, and if I'm breeding, I want to be striving for great, proven dogs.
There are many big kennels out there with extremely high quality dogs with all the popular lines who sell for big bucks. there are also smaller kennels with different lines that are just as good of quality but may not be VA material purely because of politics, although they are VA quality.
I would buy from either.

Isn't that the truth. We have Goldendoodles advertised on this site, for $2000.00 a pup! I think a good GSD is worth every cent. After breeding a litter, you really see all that is involved. More time, $ and effort than most get back, after the pups are all placed. It's got to be a laybor of love.
