 Jenn,
Are you taking the big old black skinny one home with you? I feel horrible looking at his pictures, he has that broken look in his eyes. If you are, I would like to donate to his cause. I cant afford a whole lot at the moment either but every little bit helps. Even if it helps just to buy extra feed for him.

I can't offer a suggestion as to breed.  Looks crossbred to me, pony of some kind.

As for them selling at the auction for five dollars each, it doesn't surprise me at all.  Around here, you can get free horses all day long.  People can't afford to feed and vet them, so they are just giving them away.  Want a good riding horse?  You can find them, free of charge, sometimes with all tack included.  It's so sad to see what's happened lately.

There used to be a thriving auction house not five miles from my house, but after the slaughterhouses became extinct, it shut down and now houses a boarding and training facility that's trying to get off the ground.   I agree that maybe shutting down the slaughterhouses wasn't the best thing to do...Starvation is a painful way to go, and most people around here can't afford to pay a vet so much to euthanize...Legal or not, most use a .30 caliber rifle and a backhoe when that time comes, and to me, those are the humane people, not the ones who drag the animal's suffering out until it drops on its own.

Good luck with the ponies, Jenn.  Bless you for what you're doing.

You guys are embarrassing me. I didn't ask for donations! The only thing that will be expensive is his teeth, if I find that he has enough to bother with getting them floated. Then I will look at his feet, and get them done. It shouldn't be that bad.

Backhoe and a rifle is a whole lot better than what's happened to this poor guy. I have no problem (well, of course I have a problem with it, but you all know what I mean) with putting down homeless horses rather than see them starve. My friend has been called to come get "free" horses and some cannot even walk onto the trailer. People are amazing in that they can't muster the courage to shoot the animal because it's "mean" yet it's been lying unable to get up for a week, and starving for months.

It's nonsensical, but this guy pulled at my heartstrings. I should work on saving the young, healthy ones, but I look at this guy and wonder how, after all his years of service, someone could let this happen to him?

This big guy is handsome and even in his utterly pitiful condition appears to have good structure. Agree he is TB and possibly with some nice breeding behind him. He has had the stamina to survive and now the good fortune to be rescued by you. Hope he can chew food and get some weight back. Bless you for giving him another chance.

The smaller ones look part Arab, not all Arabs have dish faces; some of the older, not so common lines have Roman noses. Barbs; barbs have Roman noses. They were the horses most of the ol' timey mustangs were descended from.
The big guy tugs at me, too. He is just the color of my horse Don, I had to sell him when I was 16. He was an Appaloosa, but built like a TB. I trained him in dressage, & started him over jumps. He went to a 14 year old who had a trainer out screening horses for her. The trainer liked how well Don could collect himself, change leads, etc. I was so flattered, because he wasn't even halter-broke when I got him. But I always looked for him, when ever I drove by fields in NJ where he went to live....even after many years, when I knew logically he could no longer be among the living, I still looked for him. He was starting to roan out with little snowflakes everywhere when he left me...it broke my heart to let him go, & that big guy has just the same color as my Don, when I first got him. Sure wish I was closer, & with a little more room! Thanks for saving him, Jen. jackie harris

LMAO... have seen everything except Unicorn as guesses... I liked "Equine Mutts" as the best description.  The Black may have a bit o' Standardbred in it... (Long back, sharp withers). The Bay could be anything, AQH/Morgan came to mind 1st glance... btw, NOT all morgans are Bays.  The mustang is such a Horse Soup of native Mustangs, and other escapee horses andd releases that it could be a bit of anything.  Best you can say is they are XYZ "type"

I agree, the big one looks like a TB. I think he could turn out to be a real beauty.  I still say no to the mustangs with the smaller ones. I've seen a number of Mustangs and they all have big feet and there is nothing refined about them. I've had Paso Finos and although there is some variation in conformation, they are generally quite refined all around, although some have mediocre looking heads.

Good luck Jenni. Please keep us posted. We have a real problem here in South Florida with starving horses too. It just breaks my heart.
