Continued:

The bulldog has been bred to a state of deformity whereby they can no longer mate or give birth without human intervention. Breathing problems are common among dogs whose face has been ‘bred-out’. The pug, for instance, also suffers from a whole range of mutations that fundamentally affect their health and wellbeing. Meanwhile Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies who lacked a desired deformity – the ridgeback – were considered obsolete and simply culled, despite the fact that they are healthier than the ‘breed standard’. All this has happened under the supervision of the Kennel Club.

However, perhaps most shocking was the callous and deluded attitude of many breeders (apart from a few honourable exceptions) and their representative body, the Kennel Club. The links between the Kennel Club, the eugenics movement and Nazism went some way to explaining the warped attitudes that sustain the breeding industry: the notion that it is acceptable to sacrifice sentient individuals for the sake of ‘racial purity’. Some of the breeders, frankly, had a tenuous grip on reality, and that’s putting it generously.

A question

How can you defend the GSD as shown in the program?

He could only woble and when walking his knees went everywhere

How can such a dog be a reflexion of the idees and goals of max von Stephanitz?

Can that dog jump 1.2 meters high?

Can he jump 5 or 6 meters far?

Can he run all day after som stuborn sheep?

Has he the guts to defend his owner when needed?

How can you defend a man (the judge) who declared that in his opinion a show dog is closer to the standard than the working dog in the picture?

If i take a quick look at the standard i can clearly see several points on which that dog failed

From the FCI standard

General apearance

...firm overal structure

Hindquarters

....they are parralel to each other...

...The hockjoints are strong and firm

Gait and movement

...Any tendency to overangulation of the hindquarters reduces the firmness and endurance...

Serious faults

Any departure fromthe above described breed characteristics which affect the working capability of the dog...

...Severe lack in general firmness

Eliminating Faults

Dogs with malformations ...

...Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified

Flaming on the working dog owners is only going to make things worse

Greetings

Johan

Bancroft, I have to agree with a little of what you say about judges, some do have "their own agenda", however, Terry Hannon is not one of them!

The future of the Breed may be a concern but many breeders try to get it right and frankly, talking of engineers, it's a poor workman that blames his tools!!!

Can you defend his judgement as shown?

2 possibilities

a: the guy hasn't a clue what he is talking about (see my previous post)

b: the other dogs were worse and all dogs had to be eliminated

Everything else is ...censured...

Greetings

Johan

I am sooooo glad i got off the show scene merry-go-round some years ago.I have yet to read anything new  and it will never change, unless people get up and do something instead of bumping your gums on a forum like this. For 3 generations of my family we have used gsds to work our livestock,i have shown some of these dogs in the past too,my dogs are able to do both.Believe me when i say they work, they are not playing at it,they work hard 24/7.The breeders,kc and all those involved in the breeding of inferior animals should be ashamed!!!!!! liz

Johan, have you heard of editing?

I'm not keen on hocky dogs myself (I do have a dog that is very unsound and hocky, I suppose you'd have him disposed of) and I agree that many show dogs are unsuitable for Trialing etc, however, I believe that as the Shepherd that won at Crufts was the German Sieger he would have to be Sch111, does that not count?

I think Zamp is a beautiful example of the Breed as I suspect do most "Breed people",  I don't think he showed very well, from the little that I seen but Crufts is not Germany and I expect it was all very alien to him and his handler.

Most working dogs are less beautiful but they're not bred with beauty in mind are they?  Most are "terrier fronted" with little hind angulation and are generally rather square.  I doubt anyone is bothered about extra or missing teeth... as long as they can BITE!  This is NOT the standard.

So... you breed for work only?  You can have a fabulous working mongrel.

I'm not a Schutzhund fan myself having always prefered Working Trials but surely Sch111 must count as work?

It's my belief that most dogs can and will work, with the right handler, it's no good always blaming the dog.

We should work together, not name call and slate each others dogs and their beliefs.  I have a cute little smilie (I think that's what they're called) too but I've no idea how to post it.
