And the mother and grandmother were ASLEEP and left the 2 MONTH OLD infant in a SWING and didn't discover the baby until 10:30!!!

Margarita,   I don't see how this story about a lab puppy would awaken, increase or lend credence to fears you may have about schutzund or large dogs in general.  Schutzhund does not awaken bloodlust nor is it about attack training.   All of us will tell you your fears are unfounded, in fact irrational, but you really need to do your own research and get involved with a club so that you can learn from the ground up what schuzhund is about and  feel comfortable with whatever conclusion you reach.

I can see the parents, media and even some general public being stupid enough to buy this shit or twist it...but he LEO's? WTF is wrong with these people? NO animal behaviouralists brought in? They make it sound as if it's a open and closed case. "we are not sure what would cause the puppy to act in this manner?" How about the kid had a shitty diaper and the puppy was attracted to the smell? Baby spit up, had formula smell on him, puppies like to chew on whatever they can get their teeth on? Oh I dunno, could be many reasons besides the animals went nuts or acted rabid, the pup concocted a whole plan to pin it on the parents but it backfired! What they say isn't even reasonable. I guess everybody just tosses kids around and 4 idiots are cool to divide up childcare and just assume the other has it covered!? I don't get why the baby wasn't just left in his crib or better yet in abassinet next to his mother when grandpa or dad left, so mom could hear his needs, make sure he was breathing and just all around safe? Just as easily the baby could have fell from the swing or strangled himself somehow in the 2 hrs nobody was PAYING ATTENTION!!!! But blame the puppy, sure that makes it easy on our conciense. Cops don't want to tell mom she is a fucking looser right after she lost her baby. We'll just call it an "accident" instead.

You are right about me being irrational regarding schutzhund training.  You have put my fears to rest.  Thank you.  By the way, who in their right mind would leave a baby in a swing without supervision for that long?  Did the 6 week old puppy pull the swing down by itself and then maul the baby?

To Steve from Belgium:

With all due respect - and I am from Europe as well (specifically Germany), the United States is a great place to raise children. I have no regrets whatsoever that I decided to stay here in this country, after my assignment in my career was over and I was supposed to be transferred back. And that was many moons ago.

I would also like to refresh your memory as well. Belgium had much bigger scale child abuse cases than the U.S. has ever had. May I remind you about Marc Dutroux and more recently the other monster - what was his name? Michel Fourniret? Granted that he was a Frenchman but his crimes happened on both French and Belgium soil in the Ardennes, hence giving him the name "monster of the Ardennes". If you don't know who I am talking about, I will be happy to google it for you. Even though I live in the good U.S. of A., I still make it my daily business to keep up with all news, events, and policies from Europe.

Regards, Chris

Margarita I was not being facitious nor was I suggesting your fears should be put to rest merely because those of us who train in schutzhund say so.  I really do think it is very important you feel completely at ease with this type of training before your husband begins to actively train the dog in it.  Otherwise it's not fair to you, or to the pup either for that matter, if you are a caretaker to the pup too.

This was why I suggested you do research before he embark on this road.  It's not enough for people to say "trust me", you must be able to be confident in your decision.

JustLurkin, I would tell whoever dropped you an email in no uncertain terms where they can stick their opinion, sideways. I agree with you 110% and thanks for posting the info, I sure as heck will email them my 2 cents.

If those adults don't get prosecuted it is a crime in and of itself and a sad declaration of the state of this country, and of where those who should be protecting the innocent are placing their priorites.

I hope you didn't take my coment the wrong way.  I really do appreciate it.  I am the major caretaker of the dog.  My husband will attend the puppy training classes and spend as much time as he can with her.  I am the one here all day.  I don't want her trained in schutzhund.  This is stupid, but I don't like to see them hitting the dogs with the soft sticks or whatever they are.  I am going to class on Sunday so I will ask the breed warden for some information.  He is also the breeder of our pup.

Margarita:

When you go on Sunday, don't be afraid to ask questions.  I only ask that you keep an open mind, you may even change your mind when you see how much fun the dogs are having.  Even if you don't change your mind, at least you will have made your decision based on facts, and no one can ever fault you for that.

I promise you the dogs are not being hurt with the stick.  I would never let anyone hurt my dog on purpose.  After class on Sunday please come back here and tell us what you think.  If you have questions about something you saw or anything about schutzhund, there are many people who frequent this board that will be happy to help you find the answers.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers!!!!
