Show me how it is logical that this set of observations can only be explained by self confidence and not by the notion of a active bond between dog and owner?"
Your argument is unwinnable. The pics I posted were not so far away. How do you know the pic you posted of the sable pup sitting, looking at something beyond him, was not taken from one hundred feet away using a zoom lens ? How do you know that sable pup who was residing in Arizona desert when pic was taken, was not worn out by running and playing for two or three hours before pic was taken? It's windy and hot in Arizona, even in winter, the air and wind will suck the moisture from a living being...how do you know that pup wasn't ready to crash like your dog did in your pic where she was too exhausted to even open an eye. (or could it be she is unhappy and depressed and ignoring her owner taking pic?)

Joan said what I was thinking. ZOOM LENS.
Poor temperament? Pensive? Insecure? Or maybe this was taken from hundreds of yards away, in the house, and he wasn't even aware of my presence and was instead watching a neighbor.
Below...aware of my presence. I'm outside standing in front of him for this shot.
I agree that you can see things from a dog's expression, but good grief...not one shot with zero information about the circumstances.

Can you clearly state what you are trying to explain / illustrate?

The picture was just used as a visual illustration , but the principle is that if the owner is physically near the dog, a sign of a functional bond/relationship is that the dog becomes obviously alert to the owner"s presence . Exceptions to this may include the dog's health or physical state at the time or the focus of the dog on some other activity, especially involving a primary drive.
Attempting to introduce semantics involving whether or not a picture is taken with a zoom or prime lens introduces noise into a model that is otherwise simple.
In fact Joan was the one who said the dog was pensive and therefore environmentally attuned and by extension of good genetics , based on a single photo ( the one of the dog I posted on this thread ).
