My post was not a catch one far from it. perhaps a few on here do think it is a catch question as you are the only one to answer i was just probing to see how some would price her as i really do not know what she may be valued at,
To tell the truth in 60 years i have never sold a dog of any breed so i would not know what she would fetch if anything over here, no more than i do in the USA that is why i asked,
I may possibly be selling her at some point but she will not be given away. but just feeling the way

Looking at the German classifieds the price for quality working line puppies ranges for 500 to 800 euro (or more). Add to that the cost of shipping - another 600 euro +/- and the price - that would include crate, passport with vet stamp and airfare.........

so with today's exchange (1 USD = 0.7308 Euro) rate.....that would be........1500 to 1900 in USD (or more)

Many of the German breeders prefer Western Union check........the exchange rate is far less favorable and the add a fee to that...... 1 US Dollar (USD) = 0.693156Euro (EUR) + their fee you will end up paying $1690 to $2144 (or more) for the above puppy.

Add to this, that you have no idea who you are purchasing from, they may be honest or they may be crooks........... if you are a gambler then go for it, if not then you will want to pay a broker to import for you.

James, I guess it depends on how you view dogs, too. I don't consider my dogs "hobbies" and so when buying a pup, I look at the price in terms of "what is a lifetime companion" worth? Now, my breeding stock would be different, but for a family or individual looking for a dog, I think more than a "hobby price" is fair, and still yet, it's a pretty cheap hobby as compared to racecars, boats, airplanes....etc. I also think you get more out of dogs. But yes, it's enough of an expense that it does take an understanding spouse, which is why I stay away from spouses.

Racecars, boats, airplanes are not middle class family hobbies. I can gain a companion from my local shelter. When I am purchasing a GSD I am looking for more than just a companion but a dog that I can participate in working venues with (SAR being my venue of choice). That is what I am paying for. Shelters, rescue, and craigslist have great companions.

I'm not sure what your definition of hobby. But my dogs don't make me a dime and I put a lot of money and time in to them. I don't get paid a dime for our SAR work but I do it for the love of working my dogs and my dedication to service.

But it is still just a hobby. If my current GSD became a wash out in our SAR program depending on the reason, but she very well might get re-homed to someone who just wants a "lifetime companion"

Paying a high price for a pup does not guarantee you will get the best pup,you can have just as good as pup buying in the 500 to 1000 dollar range and perhaps even better quality- if you have the expertise in what to look for and that is the key an experianced eye.Most decent bred pups fall in the 1000 to 1500 some try to push this up beyond 2000 but it doesnt mean you will for sure get a better dog or warranty or service after the sell,i would suspect the best pups at the best fairest prices are the smaller breeders but at the same time with very high quality breeding stock and i would include myself in that group.There are many well bred GSD pups here in america why some are paying extra to have shipped from Europe and paying all thoses extra tacked on fees is crazy,but i have to say i have done it myself once, but never again, unless i just absoluty need a certain bloodline that is not offered anywhere else.

I did pay a high price for my female and thought I was getting a really good one. Dam out is Grafental and sire is Yake vom Schwarzhorn. She is not SchH material. That is what I bought her for. She was 7 weeks old when I bought her so I know it's all a "crap shoot." Disapointed that she isn't what I thought she'd be but love her all the same. Bought another one. Male. Different breeder. Less money and more than I bargained for. He's a handful! Sport all the way! Still love my girl just gonna find her her nitch.

even in USA a buyer may have to pay for crate, health certificate and airfare....if he/she lives too far to drive.... that would be approx $350 for a 8 to 10 week puppy
