AmbiiGSD I am in full agreement with you and I believe that unless one has had one of these puppies you cannot give advice unless you are a behaviorist. (yes there is Tail Chasing) and there is the other and that is SPINNING.

I was both the breeder and owner of a SPINNING puppy last year (he was retained by me as pick of litter).
All was fine with him that was until at 5 months old he split a canine tooth and got an infection in the gum and the tooth was removed he came home on AB's and pain meds.
During his recovery he started watching his tail and then attacking it like it was foreign to him, during this time he was always with me during the day and was beside me at night, I did the distraction things, lots of exercise and stimulation, (I live on a farm with woods, swimming holes and wild life,) lots of thing to occupy his mind nothing helped and in the end his whole life was just about that thing that kept following him around (his tail).

My belief was that something happened to his brain during the anesthetic, as he was a very normal puppy up to that time.

He is now in doggy heaven. It just broke me up that I could not help him.

Ya, my Cattle Dog (Sara) is nutz.
I can see where it could be a habitual problem, especially a mix matched pup-dog with owner (environment). Sara only does this when I tell her to stand stay near the barns. She's fine in the city, parades, parks, woods, fields, walkin, everywhere... she only does it @ barns. I figured the best thing for me to do with this issue was allow it ... the barns are a good place. Keeps her busy and humans, property an the livestock are safe.

My son thinks the ferret tought her when she was a pup. Sara would spin the ferret around .. while the ferret held on to her tail kinda thing. I think they practiced while noone was home .. LOL

She did chase her tail as a pup in the bed of my truck (without the ferret LOL) .. so I took the rubber bed-liner off. She stopped.
I put the rubber-liner back on the bed-liner about a 6 months later ... she never spun or chased her tail. I dunno. Good Luck.

I miss my truck. Darn it.

Been baking for three days,
Sending everyone 2 dozen of my (special) brownies, one a day keeps the tail chasing away.
Do not drive or operate machinery while chewing.

( evil grin )

That sound like a very good cure -- better than pharmaceutical medications.
