He does look chunky in that one. You said 2.5 cups of food a day? Thats all you give him, no treats and he isn't sneaking the other dogs, or cats food? I'd fast him a day and then cut rations to 1.5 cups a day for 3 days, then 2 cups until he looks thinner. Lets see some ribs.

Move more, eat less....:)

All this talk about ribs is making me hungry :)
Dog looks fine to me.

He MAYBE eats 2.5 cups of food a day . Most of the time it's more like 1 3/4 - 2 daily - he leaves it in his dish. Sometimes he'll go a day & a half w/out eating ANYTHING. Here I am worried that he's not eating enough. (Recommended 5 cups daily on the bag!) I guess I won't be worried anymore.
He gets raw venison occasionally (he can't get enough of that! he LOVES it! - Maybe that's my raw cue!). A raw marrow bone once maybe twice a week. I'm big on not feeding him "human food." Primarily b/c I know it's not good for him, secondly I REFUSE to have a begging dog when I'm eating. He has no interest in the other dog or cats food. He rather bug me with his tennis ball!

As i said before how big are the Cups it is easy enough to weigh a cup of food if a person is not sure of how much to feed by hand, and if the Dog is eating some and leaving it another time then it is one of two things, it is ill which i doubt, or it is not hungary, and if it is not eating up its food every time then it is being fed too much, that applies to all living things, It is not science to feed a Dog correctly
All this talk of thinking it is not eating enough tells everyone that the dog is getting too much food, they are not stupid they will let you know if they are not getting enough food, and this dog is telling the owner it is being fed too much
I am saying things the owner probably does not want to hear, but it is the truth none the less, However no point in continuing with this thread, because i think the owner will not take any notice of some of us saying cut back the food and more work, So i for one am out

EXCUSE ME! I do notice & I will cut down on his food! No need to say I'm ignoring ANY advice. I seriously take offense to that! Here I am with my FIRST GSD asking for sound advise from people that KNOW the GSD dog? Really????!??? Is this how your are going to treat someone who is asking for help to do things the right way!? FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!

I have a couple of questions and I apologize because I haven't read all of the posts completely.
1. Is this dog from Kitkat's breedng? Are you referring to her "duke" the Kevin son?
2. The dog shouldn't yelp when jumping. He could have pano, a spine or leg injury, hip dysp. a combination of those things.
3. How long has this been going on?
4. I agree that he is too big (heavy) and should have been off puppy food a long time ago.
5. How big are your scoops? Have you measured them against a measuring cup? Often, people think they are giving their dog 2 scoops / cups; when each scoop is actually 2 or more cups. So, the dog is actually getting double the food.
6. Have you gotten a second opinion?
Again, I apolgize if you have answered some of these questions. Honestly, I am too impatient to read every post in long threads when I come in late. ; )

1) Yes
2) He hasn't yelped since we have been to the vet - ( he could have injured himself jumping down the stairs a couple weeks ago & landed funny)
3) A couple weeks
4) I've changed him to adult large breed as of Saturday after our vet visit
5) measured w/a measuring cup
6) no second opinion yet - does not seem to be an issue since Sat (previously "yelping" 2 -3 times a day)
Don't blame you for not wanting to read everything!

Glad to see you changed his food. I would keep an eye on him and restrict his activities for a little while. I'd walk him for exercise, but I wouldn't throw a ball or kong to him right now. Many dogs get hurt jumping and chasing kongs. I'd watch his tail and see how it hangs and wags; could be a sign of a spine injury. I'd also check for any lameness or stiffness in his joints.
Is he neutered? If yes at what age?
I'd restrict his treats as well, I think someone maybe spoiling the pup a little.
Glad to hear he's doing better.
