Beetree, I was pleased when you first mentioned the book, it's the first time I thought I know what someone is on about in this thread (albeit I don't of course know what you're thinking). Definitely worth a read, and quite complex in many ways, open to be read/interpreted in many ways and not easily satisfying like some of the drivel out there.

because when I was 22 years old, I looked around as I sat in the pew in church
 with my wife. And realized that only about 1/3 of the people in attendance really
believed in God. They were Agnostic, but Methodist agnostics.

Ahhh, so good to hear someone else thought that book was a provoking read. I would bet you also probably read, "The Life of Pi", by Yann Martel? This is a great book that leaves you pondering, well after you've put it down .... if you haven't you should!
