Personally, I had thought he would not resign as long as the left leaning media ignored the story about his 9/11 Trutherism, his racism, his communism, his Marxism, his America hatred, etc and so on. Fortunately, I was wrong

I'm in the minority, as I read news sources on the right, center AND left.

And I don't actually think the problem is that people on the right are all racist fascists.

Or that people on the left are all bleeding heart liberals, naive about evil foreigners.

I think the problem is that we are all victims -- of a profit-oriented media that is broken into three camps.

One comprised of profiteers who flame the fears of rightwing nativists who can be induced into a frenzied racist, xenophobic rage and keep them listening or reading for the profit of Fox and its circle of friends.

At the other end you have profiteers flaming the fears of leftwing internationalists who can be induced into a frenzied rage against racist idiotic nativists who appear capable of cutting their own (democratic) throats in order to do harm to anyone who looks or sounds different.

I think the media gets a lot of blame.  I'm a smart guy, educated to be discerning about rhetoric and evidence, yet when I read rightwing blogs I think "This guy has a point."  Then I read leftwing blogs and I think again: "This guy has a point."  And they were opposing points.

The center -- the Washington Post, CNN -- you may differ as to where you place it -- is also not innocent.  Who the heck thinks CNN spent the right amount of time covering Michael Jackson's death?

I think the right in the US is very far right by world standards -- but the people are not evil, as they appear to the left.  It is true that they act out in ways that reflect prejudice and unchristian compassion, especially with respect to immigrants and foreigners.  But they do love their families, their communities, their rituals, their ... dare a liberal say it... their values.

The left in this country has so much less power than the left in Europe and most of the rest of the world that they act the way powerless people do -- through handwringing about general ignorance in their country, worrying about whether the great unwashed masses (despite Maggie's demographics, the left considers the right to be the hoi polloi).   And the left, just like the right, tends to focus on its own news sources.

So nobody understands each other.  If you listen to only rightwing news, you have to think that either the news media is lying to you or the left is crazy.  If you listen  to only leftwing news, you have to think that either the news media is lying to you or the right is stupid.

So which is it?  Is the right stupid, the left crazy, or might we be victims of huge profit-making "entertainment and propaganda" machines posing as neutral media?

Before we all kill each other, perhaps we need to ask: who is the real enemy?

My recommendation?

Eveyone should spend one month reading news sources on the other side of the political spectrum.  Only when you listen to the news sources informing your opponents should you have much to say about your opponent's character or intelligence.

In the end, maybe the left is crazy and maybe the right is stupid.  But maybe not, and perhaps we have been manipulated.

On another note, I have to retract my disagreement with sueincc when she advanced the idea that civil rights progress had come from both sides of the congressional aisle.  I had completely forgotten that Truman desegregated the armed forces after WWII.  Civil rights progress has indeed come from both "the party of Lincoln" (GOP before 1964 and Dems since 1964) AND the other side (Dems before 1964 and GOP since 1964).

MVF,

Considering your post...lets look at the Van Jones media blitz prior to today..............................

Total words about the Van Jones controversy in the New York Times: 0.

Total words about the Van Jones controversy in the Washington Post: 0.

Total words about the Van Jones controversy on NBC Nightly News: 0.

Total words about the Van Jones controversy on ABC World News: 0.

Total words about the Van Jones controversy on CBS Evening News: 0.

If you were to receive all your news from any one of these outlets, or even all of them together, and you heard about some sort of controversy involving President Obama's Special Adviser for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, your response would be, "Huh?" If you heard that that adviser, Van Jones, had apologized for a number of remarks and positions in the recent past, your response would be, "What?" And if you were in the Obama White House monitoring the Jones situation, you would be hoping that the news organizations listed above continue to hold the line -- otherwise, Jones, who is quite well thought of in Obama circles, would be history.
